Rust’s Jensen Ackles Calls Late Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins an ‘Inspiration’

Rust’s Jensen Ackles issues a statement regarding the tragic accidental shooting on the film’s set, calling the late Halyna Hutchins an “inspiration.”

Following the passing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, one of the film’s stars, Jensen Ackles, has spoken out about the impact Hutchins had on him while she was alive.

“I’m not even sure where to start,” the actor wrote in an Instagram post. “This has been a tragedy of epic proportions that we are all still processing… she was an inspiration.”

The actor went into further detail with an anecdote about the late cinematographer. “Earlier last week I felt compelled to tell Halyna just how awesome I thought she was,” Ackles wrote. “I told her how incredible I thought her camera shots were and just how exciting it was to watch her and her team work. Truly. She laughed and said thank you and gave me a hug. I’ll forever be grateful we had that moment. She had a spunk and passion that infected the entire crew from top down.”

Hutchins was killed in a tragic accident on the set of Rust on Oct. 21. Rust is co-produced by Alec Baldwin, who also stars in the film. On the day in question, Baldwin discharged a prop gun on-set — a gun he had been told was “cold,” meaning it ostensibly carried no ammunition. Unbeknownst to Baldwin, however, there was actually a live round in the gun. The gunshot killed Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, the latter of whom ultimately survived the incident.

Baldwin previously released his own statement on the matter on Twitter. “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,” the actor wrote.” In the statement, Baldwin also explained that he was “fully cooperating” with investigators. The film’s production has been suspended in the wake of the accident.

Mere hours before the accident, crew members on the set of Rust walked out due to unsafe working conditions. “There were a serious lack of safety meetings on set,” one source told The Los Angeles Times. The source also alleged that there had been three prop gun misfires in the week before the accident.

“She will be incredibly missed by all of us who knew and admired her,” Ackles concluded in his Instagram statement. He also shared the links to the AFI scholarship fund that was created in Hutchins’ and the GoFundMe that was created to support her husband and son. The fundraiser, which originally had a $10,000 goal, has raised almost $200,000 since it was launched.

Halyna Hutchins was regarded as a gifted cinematographer who worked on projects such as ArchenemyDarlin’ and Blindfire.
