Roswell, New Mexico star Nathan Dean explains how Season 3 addresses the nationwide protests against police brutality that occurred in summer 2020.
The cast and crew of Roswell, New Mexico explained how the protests against police brutality throughout summer 2020 impacted the series.
During the virtual Comic-Con@Home panel for The CW series Roswell, New Mexico, star Nathan Dean, who plays Max Evans, a deputy sheriff and an alien, was asked what it was like to play a police officer on television in the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality following the May 2020 murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. In particular, Parsons was asked if it affected how he played his character, Max. “Not how I play Max, but it definitely–Chris [Hollier] and the other writers did write to it, to an extent,” Dean said.
“And we were able to kind of talk about it and, yeah it was a little daunting in the wake of everything that was happening to then step back into that uniform and try and be a good guy when no one really saw cops that way at the time,” said Dean. “So that was a hard, good challenge and I think our writers handled that really well. And, hopefully, from their writing, we can kind of see both sides of the argument. You can see that there are a lot of bad people that put on a uniform, but there’s also good ones and I think our writers and Hollier did a good job talking about that.”
Dean also addressed this in an interview with CBR, saying that the series has never shied away from addressing real-world topics. “I mean, the fact that Max is a cop, that’s controversial in and of itself, and we definitely talk about that,” said Dean. “Yeah, like you said, we don’t shy away from situations that are going on in the real world, and I think this year, we were given a good platform to be able to have these conversations with level heads and not shy away from it.”
During the Comic-Con@Home panel, showrunner Chris Hollier also added that one of the episodes directly addresses this issue in an interaction between Max Evans, a white police officer, and a black reporter. “There’s a great episode in the middle that kinda deals with regiments, and as you saw, everything with the Capitol riots became very, very poignant,” Hollier said. “Even within that episode one of my favorite scenes of the season, and a lot of writers had their hand in making it, is a scene between [Dean] and a reporter, where we sort of just talk about some things and the world is complicated, that’s fine. But, it’s a really nice scene that just highlights where we’re at and, again, with a tiny, little twinge of hope of trying to make it better.”
During the same panel, Hollier also explained how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic impacted the production and writing process for Season 3, saying that while it was difficult it did “let us focus on the people that are here, that you’re looking at.” Hollier said, “So like, it was harder to fly guest stars in because of COVID, like people sometimes were really afraid to get on the plane or we just couldn’t get them because another show would lock them down. So, we all told each other this is like Shakespeare in the Park, these are the players and we’re gonna lean into all the great talent that they have here.”
Roswell, New Mexico is the television adaptation of author Melinda Metz’s book series Roswell High. Season 3 of Roswell, New Mexico is currently airing on The CW with new episodes every Monday.
