Writer Gary Whitta teams with artist Robert Darickson for Batman: Fortress, an eight-issue limited series that pits the Dark Knight against aliens.

DC’s newest Batman series turns the Dark Knight into Earth’s last hope of surviving an alien invasion.

In May, writer Gary Whitta and artist Darick Robertson present Batman: Fortress, an eight-issue miniseries that follows the arrival of an alien ship, which plunges the Earth into chaos. Though this situation would usually be a job for Superman, the Man of Steel has gone missing. So as Batman tries to combat a crime wave unfolding in Gotham City, he’ll have to step onto the global stage and lead the Justice League into action against the alien threat. And according to DC, Batman: Fortress will challenge readers’ perceptions of Superman throughout its “brutal and shocking” run.

Batman: Fortress is the first DC work from Whitta, who previously co-wrote the screenplay to Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Speaking to DC, Whitta said he is excited for the opportunity to tell his own Batman epic and told fans they should expect to see the dark corners of the DC Universe exposed throughout the series. “I hope that together we’ve done justice to some of DC’s most iconic characters,” Whitta said, “while at the same time reinventing everything you thought you knew about them…”

Though Whitta is a newcomer to DC’s comics, Robertson is a veteran. Last year alone, Robertson helmed the first arc of DC’s digital-first Legends of the Dark Knight revival and drew Justice League: Last Ride. And the artist is excited to return to Gotham City for Batman: Fortress, citing the opportunity to reunite with some of his favorite past collaborators. On reuniting with Ben Abernathy, who edited Robertson’s popular series The Boys in 2006, Robertson said, “It’s been a dream project, with a lot of fun twists and surprises ahead for the readers!”

Outside of Batman: Fortress, DC’s monthly Batman title will soon be crossing over with Robin and Deathstroke Inc. for “Shadow War.” In March, the three-month storyline kicks off with Shadow War Alpha #1 by writer Joshua Williamson and artist Viktor Bogdanovic. The central plot of the crossover follows the Dynamic Duo as they chase after Deathstroke, who is wanted for the murder of Robin’s grandfather, Ra’s al Ghul.

While Batman: Fortress removes Superman from the Dark Knight’s life, the two heroes can be seen together in the upcoming series, World’s Finest. Written by Mark Waid and drawn by Dan Mora, World’s Finest takes place in DC’s past and sees Batman try to save Superman from Kryptonite poisoning. Additionally, the book will feature appearances from various other Silver Age characters, including the Doom Patrol, Deadman and Metallo.
