Rogue One Director Doesn’t Regret Killing Every Major Character

Director Gareth Edwards reflects upon his decision to kill all the main characters in Rogue One and how their deaths tie into the film’s message.

The ending of Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story shocked audiences when all of the film’s main characters died during the Rebel Alliance’s assault on Scarif; in a recent interview, the director said he wouldn’t change a thing.

“No, no. I’m really pleased that they all died,” Edwards told StarWars.com. “As bad as that sounds. They don’t appear anywhere else in the original trilogy, so if they had lived and had any sort of significant story in terms of their lives, it would have been strange for them not to have a fleeting glimpse somewhere in the original trilogy.”

Rogue One, which premiered in 2016, is set right before the start of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope and tells the story of the rebels who stole the blueprints for the Death Star, detailing the first effective victory for the Rebel Alliance against the Galactic Empire and kicking off the events of the original trilogy.

“I remember when [then-Disney CEO] Bob Iger first stood out on stage and announced the film, it was some event at some point, and they put up pictures of all the actors,” Edwards continued. “I remember just looking at all those faces and going, ‘I wonder how everyone would feel if he also added at the end, ‘By the way, everyone on this stage you’re looking at dies at the end of the film. All of them will be dead.” It’s not a very Disney thing to do. So I was really excited that they never, ever brought it up or questioned it. It never became a thing.

“And I think it makes it more mythical,” the director concluded. “It felt more truthful to have a bittersweet ending where the moral of the story was, ‘There’s a lot of loss that occurs trying to fight whoever it is and for whatever reason. Think really hard about it before you do it because there’s a good chance you won’t come home.’ I’m sort of happy that we have that feeling in the film because I think it’s true.”

Despite his death in Rogue One, the character of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) is set to return in Andor, an upcoming Disney+ original series set several years prior to the events of Edwards’ film. Cassian is one of many other fan-favorite characters are set to feature in upcoming projects. The iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett will star in his own series, which premieres on Dec. 29, and Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker in both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka.
