Invincible creator Robert Kirkman teases the possible future appearance of fan favorite comic character Wolf-Man in the animated Amazon series.
Invincible creator Robert Kirkman teased Wolf-Man may appear in future seasons of the acclaimed Amazon series.
During a digital panel for Comic-Con@Home 2021 International, Kirkman briefly touched on the topic of Gary Hampton, also known as Wolf-Man, one of the most popular and iconic characters from the Invincible comic book universe. When a fan asked Kirkman if the superhero lycanthrope had a chance of making an appearance in the Invincible animated series, Kirkman simply said, “There’s a chance. I’ll leave it at that.”
Wolf-Man, who was created by Kirkman, debuted in The Astounding Wolf-Man #1 in 2007. The series stars Gary Hampton, a billionaire CEO who gains the powers of a lycanthrope after he is mauled by a werewolf during a family vacation. With the help of a vampire named Zechariah and the invention of special vambraces that can store moonlight, Hampton learns to use his new werewolf powers for good.
While Kirkman crafted a multitude of spinoff characters who coinhabited the story world of Mark Grayson’s Invincible, Wolf-Man became one of the most beloved. The Astounding Wolf-Man, which concluded in 2010, was unique for contrasting the violent, dark curse of lycanthropy with Hampton’s drive to become a traditional, morally upstanding superhero.
Invincible and Wolf-Man shared a handful of story connections throughout their respective comic runs. Wolf-Man appeared in the Invincible series several times, most notably in the series Invincible Universe. Kirkman’s tease doesn’t rule out similar crossovers occurring in the Invincible animated series, which Amazon has already renewed for two more seasons. While the comics could lend plenty of story material for the Amazon series to work with, Kirkman highlighted in his comic-con panel that the story of the Amazon series could stray from the comic by adding new storylines or scenes to enhance the quality of the storytelling.
“The show will progress about the way season one did. Sometimes we will hew very close to the comics. Sometimes we will stray,” Kirkman said. “There’s a lot of stuff along the way that I want to, you know, like plus up and change.”
Kirkman spent the rest of the Invincible section of his comic-con panel discussing other comic characters set to appear in the show, including one particularly notorious Viltrumite antagonist. He also discussed the major advantage of adapting Invincible over The Walking Dead from comics to TV, and he expressed his love for the “Think Mark” memes, which took the internet by storm when season one of Invincible launched on Amazon earlier this year.
