Following the Season 6 premiere of Riverdale, fans are having a hard time believing that [SPOILER] is really dead.
A death in the Season 6 premiere of Riverdale — which is also the start of the five-part “Rivervale” event — has fans wondering what this could mean for the CW show moving forward.
In the episode’s final minutes, the pure-hearted Cheryl Blossom ripped out Archie Andrews’ heart in a blood sacrifice. Fans were left in disbelief, with many swiftly sharing their thoughts on Twitter.

Season 6’s “Rivervale” episodes take place following the events of the Season 5 finale, after Archie and Betty discovered a bomb under Archie’s bed that was planted by Hiram Lodge. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa described the episodes as “a little bit darker, a little bit weirder, a little more twisted in Rivervale” and “firmly in the horror genre.”
Despite Archie’s untimely death, there is still much to look forward to in the remaining four episodes of the event. Kiernan Shipka was recently announced to reprise her titular witchy role from Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina in the fourth part. The young witch will come to Rivervale to help Cheryl with a spell, and it’s been suggested that it could take place before Sabrina’s dark baptism in Season 1.
Archie has survived a bear attack, but his apparent death in the Season 6 premiere seems all but permanent. KJ Apa’s carrot top character has been a leader of sorts for the town over the last few seasons, but since it’s now the Town of Rivervale, things have changed. Even Aguirre-Sacasa is sticking to his guns on this one, telling EW, “I can say that Archie is dead. In [season 6, episode 2], the town isn’t exactly mourning him, because they killed him, but the town does know that they sacrificed Archie. There’s a scene in fact where Cheryl and Nana are toasting Archie’s sacrifice because now their maple trees are producing maple syrup again. And Betty is pregnant with Archie’s love child. And we won’t see K.J. [next episode]. All of those things are true.”
New episodes of Riverdale air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
