Science comes in many different forms, whether it’s through the pursuit of knowledge, creating inventions the likes of which no one has seen before, or making theories and new discoveries. Whatever field it is, scientists helm these journeys to understand and unravel the unknown with their brilliant minds.
Sadly, the life of a scientist isn’t for everyone, and there are those who come off as putting the “mad” in “mad scientist.” In anime, there are actually quite a few scientist characters who, despite making discoveries or inventing something people can only dream of, are actually horrible at science. Whether it’s because of miscalculations or just that their personality gets in the way, these anime scientists aren’t exactly the medium’s best.
10 Rintaro Okabe’s Invention Is A Fluke (Steins;Gate)
Rintaro Okabe is the self-proclaimed mad scientist of Steins;Gate. For a good chunk of the anime, he’s overly dramatic, concocting a story about working against a dark organization, making up false “true names” for himself and others, and doing a lot of insane posing and posturing like some kind of anime supervillain. One thing he’s not is an actual scientist.
Despite the chuunibyou behavior and poor social skills, Okabe was able to invent a time machine microwave, but it’s really more like he stumbled onto it by accident. Okabe’s actually intelligent, but his scientist act is simply just that.
9 Fukegao Was Killed By His Brother On Accident (One-Punch Man)
One-Punch Man’s world of heroes is rife with villains; Fukegao of the “Brain and Brawn Brothers” is one of them. This mad scientist sought to conquer the world by turning his brother into a giant monster with a super steroid, which seemed possible for a moment as his experiment was a success, but he got a big head pretty quickly.
Fukegao is almost buried in rubble upon his brother’s transformation, and after Saitama arrives, he’s accidentally killed by his brother when he orders him to kill the hero. Fukegao’s ambition ended up overriding his caution, failing to factor in the ways things could go wrong.
8 Goro Otaki Is More Obsessed With His Wild Desires Than Anything Else (Godzilla: Singular Point)
In Godzilla: Singular Point, Goro Otaki is a mad scientist known throughout the world for his wild reputation and desire to protect the earth. Admittedly Otaki and his subordinates at Otaki Factory have built some rather impressive machines, but Otaki’s less focused on making discoveries or inventing things for the good of others, so much as he is obsessed with aliens, kaiju, and of course his fighting robot Jet Jaguar.
When monsters start appearing in the anime, Otaki is quick to jump into Jet Jaguar to fight them, throwing caution to the wind and prompting his aides to keep him from getting himself killed.
7 Daphne’s Wish To See Dragons Again Has Destructive Consequences (Fairy Tail)
There’s something to be said about the dangers of being overzealous in one’s research, and Fairy Tail’s Daphne is a prime example. This saleswoman/dark mage was obsessed with one thing – making dragons real again – except her experiments and the logic are all sorts of screwy. Sadistic, careless, and egotistical, Daphne’s goal is more important to her than anything else.
Whether her theories are well thought out or not, Daphne enjoys watching others suffer and isn’t above petty revenge. After she unleashed artificial dragons to rampage through her hometown, the city used the spell Hidden to hide from her, and she used her own magic to keep them from dispelling it as payback.
6 Dr. Gel’s Supposedly A Scientist, But Not A Very Good One (Space Dandy)
Dr. Gel is a member of Space Dandy’s Gogol Empire, who’s hellbent on capturing Dandy throughout the series. Despite his brutish, ape-like appearance, Dr. Gel is apparently a very intelligent scientist, though that detail can easily be forgotten amongst his many failures.
Dr. Gel is never really seen putting his supposed scientific mind to use, the closest being when he’s distracted by research, but otherwise, nothing that indicates him of being a scientist. Dr. Gel comes off more like an incompetent errand boy who Dandy doesn’t even notice for the bulk of the series.
5 The Head Researcher Was Lazy And Absent-Minded Till The Day He Died (KonoSuba)
In KonoSuba, it becomes pretty evident that Kazuma wasn’t the first to be transported to the fantasy world. The Head Researcher (as he’s referred to) was another human sent by Aqua to defeat the Demon King whose ability allowed him to create anything he could imagine. However, the Head Researcher ended up becoming pretty lazy in time.
Despite creating the Crimson Demon Clan and the mighty Destroyer, the Head Researcher’s lack of motivation and absent-mindedness actually created more harm than good. He ended up forgetting to think of a way to actually control the Destroyer, causing him to stay inside it until he died.
4 Doctor Eggman Can Create Plenty Of Robots, But Can’t Beat One Hedgehog (S0nic X)
Doctor Eggman (aka Ivo Robotnik) is the arch nemesis of the speedy Sonic the Hedgehog, and he’s up to no good during Sonic X just like his videogame counterpart. After being transported to Earth, Eggman decides to set his sights on conquering this new world and just like back home, he’s not very good at it.
Despite him being able to make plenty of complex and varied robots, Eggman can’t seem to get them to crush his spiky blue foe, let alone take over the world. His plans usually end up being more nonsensical than dangerous, and during the anime, he’s not even capable of choosing the right robot for the job, leaving it all up to chance.
3 Bray Zenn And Cara Liss Cross More Than A Few Lines (Pokémon)
There have been many questionable scientists in the Pokémon franchise, like professors that end up leaving all the work to ten-year-olds for example. However, in Pokémon Master Journeys, Ash and friends meet researchers Bray Zenn and Cara Liss as they’re excavating Pokémon fossils, and discover their rather bizarre logical leaps.
After unearthing a few fossils, the two make some wild theories on how these fossils connect, despite the fact that clearly none of them were meant to go together. They even end up mixing up the fossils and revive two Pokémon whose body parts still don’t match. Neither of them ever admits they made a mistake on either case, being careless and brazen as their names imply.
2 Shou Tucker Only Had One Success To His Name (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Shou Tucker is a rather infamous figure in Fullmetal Alchemist for his horrible experiments in creating talking chimeras. After creating the first chimera using his wife, Shou was made a State Alchemist (the Sewing-Life Alchemist), but after years without another similar success, Shou created a second chimera using his daughter and pet dog.
While these actions are beyond horrible, it’s very clear that as both a scientist and alchemist, Shou’s skills were lacking and his fears of failure and poverty are were what made him cross the line in both instances. Without enacting alchemy’s ultimate taboo, Shou Tucker’s nothing more than a subpar alchemist.
1 Tabane Shinonono Is Dangerously Childish And Careless (Infinite Stratos)
Infinite Stratos’ Tabane Shinonono is the creator behind all the IS Units and often refers to herself as “Tabane the Genius,” though her attitude makes her more of a big child. Immature, reckless, rather full of herself, and without a shred of empathy for others, Tabane is dangerously intelligent and dangerously inept at the same time.
Tabane does plenty of morally questionable things throughout the series for basically no reason, and without any remorse either. To make matters worse, it seems she doesn’t even understand how her inventions work, as she admits she has zero idea why Ichika can pilot an IS.
