Rift Apart Animation Was Inspired by Paul Rudd

Insomniac lead animator Lindsay Thompson reveals Paul Rudd inspired an animation in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and the resemblance is uncanny.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s groundbreaking animation took inspiration from a Hollywood star, and the resulting resemblance is uncanny.

Insomniac Game’s highly successful Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart showcased the power of what was possible on the PlayStation 5 when it launched earlier this year. Rift Apart pushed boundaries in gameplay, graphics and animation, the last of which took inspiration from surprising sources. Lindsay Thompson, the lead animator at Insomniac, revealed that one of Ratchet’s animations was modeled after the behaviors and quirks of beloved actor Paul Rudd. In a thread posted on Twitter, Thompson shared the animation in question alongside a GIF of Paul Rudd in the 2017 series Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later to showcase the precision of the animation.

“I remember the direction for the animator for this shot was: Paul Rudd,” Thompson said.

The animation team seems to have taken Thompson’s direction to heart. Between the half-smile, the tilt of the head and the arm movement, the similarities between Ratchet and Rudd are undeniable. The example serves as one of many reasons why Insomniac has publicly taken pride in the staggering success of Rift Apart. Insomniac continued to honor the work of the team as its official Twitter account left a short-but-sweet reply to Thompson’s tweet.

“Good direction,” Insomnia said.

Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is now available for PlayStation 5.
