Ridley Scott Joins Chorus of Directors that Loathe Superhero Films

There is this trend among directors that haven’t worked for Marvel Studios or on a DC project, and that is to talk badly about superhero movies in general. The latest one to speak out is 83-year-old Ridley Scott whose recent film, The Last Duel, was a critical success but a box office disappointment.

In a discussion with Deadline, the director referred to superhero films as “They’re f***king boring as S**t.” He went on to say that he’s done three great scripted superhero movies: Alien, Gladiator and Blade Runner and says if he can do it, “Why don’t the superhero movies have better stories? Sorry, I got off the rail, but I mean, c’mon. They’re mostly saved by special effects, and that’s becoming boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you’ve got the money.”

Scott joins other notable directors who has said disparaging things about superhero films including Martin Scorsese who referred to them as “theme park rides” and not “cinema” while Dune director Denis Villeneuve said that they’ve become too formulaic. And James Gunn has recently said superhero films had become “boring“.
