Masters of the Universe: Revelations Part 2 features a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it homage to Clueless that fans will love.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2, now streaming on Netflix.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation brings together a stellar cast of voices, many of whom are best known for their work on TV series and films that helped to define the 1990s. For example, Sarah Michelle Gellar (Teela) is best known for her role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She’s joined by the likes of Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series), who voices Mer-Man, and Alicia Silverstone, who plays Queen Marlena. While the latter utters one of the season’s cringiest lines in Part 2’s third episode, “The Gutter Rat,” she is quickly redeemed with an unexpected reference to her most iconic film.
In, Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2, Evil-Lyn seizes the power of Grayskull for herself, and ascends to godhood. As she begins her takeover, she also destroys Preternia — essentially, Eternia’s heaven — and the past sorceresses and champions who dwell there. Queen Marlena subsequently exclaims, “She just killed everyone in heaven!” It’s not a familiar string of words to hear, and its delivery proves it may not have translated from the page as successfully as intended. However, Marlena still has more tricks of her sleeve by sneaking in the classic “As if!” line from Silverstone’s 1995 classic Clueless.
Silverstone starred in the teen comedy as Cher Horowitz, a ditzy and popular Beverly Hills high school student who frequently uses her status to help others, and dismisses anything she doesn’t like with a simple “As if!” However, in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Marlena flips the delivery from that of casual dismissal to encouragement.
In the penultimate episode, “Hope, for a Destination,” Teela tries to sneak into Castle Grayskull while King Randor leads the charge against Evil-Lyn’s forces. Bidding farewell to his wife before battle, Randor says, “Teela should be inside by now. If Adam could keep Evil-Lyn busy, our new Sorceress just might give us a fighting chance. If not, Eternia may have seen her last sunrise.”
However, the somber scene is quickly turned around when Marlena replies, “As if,” with a smirk. Her sly response quickly lifts the king’s spirits and gives him just enough strength to face Eternia’s enemies.
In Revelations: The Masters of the Universe: Revelation Aftershow, executive producer Kevin Smith explains the story behind the line.
“If you never saw Clueless, you won’t hear it, but if you knew Clueless, you’re like, ‘Wait a second. Did that just happen?'” he said. However, he had to practically beg Silverstone to say the line from her most iconic role. “I think I only did it because of how you asked,” Silverstone said.
Smith never shies away in his projects from expressing his love for the popular entertainment that helped to shape his life, even with smaller, nostalgic references like those two iconic words: “As if!”
The entire 10-episode first season of Masters of the Universe: Revelation is now available on Netflix.
