Star Trek: Resurgence’s developers tease what fans can expect from the newly announced decision-driven narrative video game coming in early 2022.
Among all the major surprises at 2021’s The Game Awards, one of the biggest was the announcement of Star Trek: Resurgence. The upcoming video game will hit modern consoles exclusively through the Epic Games Store for PC. Developed by Dramatic Labs studio, Star Trek: Resurgence will be a choice-based video game. Many of Dramatic Labs’ development team previously worked on beloved franchise-based and choice-based games with Telltale Games (The Walking Dead, Batman: The Telltale Series, Tales From the Borderlands) before launching the independent game studio. In Star Trek: Resurgence, the video game follows two Starfleet officers unraveling a sinister conspiracy pushing two civilizations to start a war.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, cinematic director Kent Mudle and lead writer Dan Martin teased what fans can expect from Resurgence. The creatives also explained how the Star Trek license works so well for choice-based, narrative gameplay and revealed where Resurgence fits in Star Trek’s ever-expanding universe.
How did the opportunity to play in the Star Trek Universe with Star Trek: Resurgence arrive?
Dan Martin: Our collective history of working together on licensed games gave us the credibility to take on a franchise of the stature of Star Trek. We’ve always prided ourselves on examining what makes an IP work, and leaning into delivering on those aspects. It also helped that we were all fans of Star Trek to begin with and brought our own passion to the project and this is a game I’ve always wanted to make. With almost 55 years of (real-world) history to the Star Trek franchise, there’s a lot to live up to, and we want to do it justice in Star Trek: Resurgence.
What makes this particular time period in Star Trek history, after Star Trek: The Next Generation, the perfect era to set this game?
Martin: It was important to carve out some room to tell our original story in some uncharted space of our own — where the outcomes aren’t pre-determined by events we’ve already seen — while still allowing us to connect to the larger Star Trek world. We found fertile ground in setting our game in the time following Star Trek: Nemesis — as well as the TV shows of that era: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager — and before the events leading up to the Romulan supernova, which is explored in Picard.
Players get to control First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineer Carter Diaz in making major decisions across the game. What can you share about these protagonists?
Kent Mudle: We’ll be sharing more details about these characters closer to the release, but one of the important differences between our narrative adventure games and non-interactive storytelling is that the player gets to help shape these characters for themselves. What kind of leaders do they emulate? Kirk? Picard? Janeway? Burnham? When they are fighting for survival down in the trenches, what’s more important to them: Duty or friendship?
Dramatic Labs features plenty of narrative adventure game veterans from Telltale. What did you want to bring to this specific project?
Mudle: We put a lot of stock in the experience gained and lessons learned from our collective time at Telltale. But it’s important to evolve. For us, that includes building the game in Epic’s Unreal Engine, which has allowed us to bring a greater visual fidelity to the game.
Martin: We developed the story using our proprietary screenwriting and narrative design engine, Beanie™, which is a powerful tool for constructing interactive stories. We’re bringing a variety of new gameplay styles to Star Trek: Resurgence that we’re really excited to put in players’ hands
Star Trek really does seem tailor made for the kind of games many of the development team have worked on to great success. How is it working with a license as iconic and enduring as Star Trek and what did you want to bring to the franchise?
Martin: As I mentioned, it’s a lot to live up to. We all come to this game as fans of the franchise first. One of the things we strive for is to make a game that allows fans (and non-fans alike) to feel like they’ve stepped into their favorite feature film or TV show from this rich universe. That means delivering a broad Star Trek experience where you get to command the bridge of a starship, make tough decisions in the heat of the moment, engage in phaser fights, uncover mysteries, build friendships and spar with rivals.
What else can you tease about Star Trek: Resurgence to help whet fans’ appetites?
Martin: First of all, I’m just thrilled that the world gets to see what we’ve been keeping under wraps while we’ve been working on the game.
Mudle: There will be more reveals to come as we get closer to release. Fans will see how it connects to some of the great Star Trek that has come before and how it charts a new course across the universe.
Developed by Dramatic Labs, Star Trek: Resurgence will be released in early 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and exclusively through the Epic Games Store for PC.
