Rent-A-Girlfriend will return for a second season.

The official website for the popular rom-com anime confirmed an encore season in a new announcement posted alongside a image featuring the show’s four main heroines. The announcement was followed up with the release of a teaser trailer that once again concentrates on the women in protagonist Kazuya’s life. The trailer also revealed a July 2022 premiere window for the show’s continuation. The series’ creator, Reiji Miyajima,  drew a new illustration to celebrate the second season’s announcement.

The series began in 2017 with a manga that was serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine. The manga has been a huge success for publisher Kodansha, and now boosts a circulation of over 8 million copies worldwide. An anime adaptation was produced by the legendary TMS Animation, the studio responsible for long-running anime such as Lupin the Third and Detective Conan (Case Closed). The animated series was directed by Kazuomi Koga, who previously worked as an episode director on Fire Force, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- and Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku. Both the anime and manga have received some praise for offering a slightly more mature take on the harem sub-genre.

Rent-A-Girlfriend tells the story of Kazuya Kinoshita, a kind but somewhat emotionally immature college student who uses a compensated dating app to rent a girlfriend for a single date. That paid girlfriend is Chizuru Mizuhara, a beautiful woman who happens to be Kazuya’s next door neighbor. After seeing reviews from other men who have paid Chizuru for a date, a jealous Kazuya leaves Chizuru a scathing review on the app, which prompts her to call him out on his own shortcomings. The two are forced to stay in contact with each other, however, when a misunderstanding with Kazuya’s family forces them to pretend like they’re a real couple.

The original season’s cast and crew have been confirmed to return for the second season. The anime stars veteran voice actor Sora Amamiya, who is best known for portraying the goddess Aqua in the KonoSuba anime, as Chizuru. World Trigger and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime‘s Shun Horie will also reprise his role as Kazuya. The series also features Aoi Yuki (Persona 5), Nao Toyama (Nisekoi, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU), and Rie Takahashi (Re:ZERO, Teasing Master Takagi-San).
