Here’s what you need to know about Dexter Season 9, including the show’s release date, plot, trailer information and news.
Set in Florida, Showtime’s Dexter — which was based on a series of novels by Jeff Lindsay — followed forensic technician and serial killer Dexter Morgan as he killed those whom he believed had escaped true justice. The show proved a smash hit for Showtime when it released in 2006, but by the time it wrapped up in 2013, many felt that Dexter had lost its edge, resulting in a finale that’s generally remembered as unsatisfying. However, nearly a decade later, Dexter will get another chance to leave his mark on TV viewers with Showtime’s revival of the series.
Here’s what we know so far about the Dexter Season 9, including the show’s release date, plot and more.
What Is the Plot of Dexter Season 9?
At the end of Season 8, Dexter avenged the death of his sister, Debra Morgan, at the hands of Oliver Saxon/The Brain Surgeon. He then took her body on his boat and buried her at sea during a hurricane. While Dexter was presumed to have died in the hurricane, he survived and was shown living as a lumberjack far, far away from Florida. His son, Harrison Morgan, was left in the care of Hannah McKay, Dexter’s love interest and a serial killer herself.
The plot of Dexter Season 9 isn’t known at this time. However, teasers have revealed that Dexter will be working as a sales associate for a fish and game supply company in Iron Lake, New York, under the assumed name “Jim Lindsay.” We also know that he’ll find himself up against Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown), who was described by Variety as “the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake. He’s realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop. Powerful, generous, loved by everyone — he’s a true man of the people. If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you.”
Aside from Michael C. Hall, no one from the main cast of Dexter has been confirmed for Season 9. However, John Lithgow will reprise his role as Arthur Mitchell/The Trinity Killer, despite his death in Season 4. New cast members include Julia Jones as police officer Angela Bishop, Alano Miller as Iron Lake Police Sergeant and assistant wrestling coach Logan, Jamie Chung as true crime podcaster Molly, Oscar Wahlberg as high school wrestling captain Zach, Johnny Sequoyah as Bishop’s daughter and Jack Alcott as Randall.
Does Dexter Season 9 Have a Trailer?
Showtime has released several teasers for Dexter Season 9 teasing the titular serial killer’s life following the Season 8 finale and his return to his murderous ways. The most substantive of those teasers, which you can see above, revealed Dexter’s new name and career.
When Does Dexter Season 9 Release?
At this time, the ten-episode Dexter Season 9 does not yet have an official release date. However, production began in February and is expected to conclude in July. If those dates hold, Dexter Season 9 seems likely to premiere in either fall or winter 2021.
