Red Hood’s Story Will Be Familiar, Yet Different From the Comics

Titans’ showrunner Greg Walker discusses the show’s interpretation of the Red Hood and how the character will be both familiar and distinct.

Season 3 of HBO Max’s Titans will showcase Jason Todd as Red Hood, and according to the showrunner, he will be both familiar to and distinct from his comic book counterpart.

In an interview with Central Illinois Proud, Greg Walker, Titans‘ showrunner, discussed the new season and possible divergences from the show’s comic book origins. He was asked if the show will feature “a brand new Red Hood” or if they drew inspiration from Curran Walters’ take on the villain. “I don’t think it’s brand new Red Hood. There are definitely comics we’re pulling from that people will notice,” Walker responded. “More from an origin notion. Where we start and what we do with it will go our own way.”

Titans has already diverged from comics canon in terms of Jason Todd’s story in several ways. For example, in the show, Jason is primarily raised by his Uncle Ray instead of his mother Catherine like in the comics. However, many of the central aspects of the character’s story persist across both the comics and the show (e.g., Jason tries to steel the tires off the Batmobile in both versions).

These changes and consistencies heavily informed how the writers and creators behind Titans crafted their interpretation of Red Hood. “You’ll notice Jason’s descent into Red Hood is a little different than how it happens in the book, but a lot of the reasons are built both in our show and in the books,” Walker explained.

Created by Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns and Greg Berlanti, Titans debuted in 2018 and the first two seasons are currently streaming on HBO Max.
