Red Hood Takes on a New Protégé

[ad_1]

Jason Todd has been on teams like the Titans and the Outlaws, but Future State: Gotham forces the Bat-Family antihero to take on a sidekick.

Jason Todd gets a new sidekick in Future State: Gotham.

While investigating the murder of Grifter, who was killed last issue after the Next Joker bit his head off, Jason aka Peacekeeper Red gets a visit from Hunter Panic, a bounty hunter who seeks to apprehend masked threats in Gotham City. Hunter Panic is a new legacy character created for the series, taking on the mantle of Violet Paige aka Mother Panic and her technology, including an armored suit and glider. Jason reluctantly agrees to be the mask hunter’s mentor for the case, which reverses the character’s attitudes from another dark future.

Future State started as a plethora of miniseries set within a possible future of the DC Universe, with titles running from January to March 2021. The books teased where the stories of current ongoing series from the “Infinite Frontier” era of DC Comics might develop towards, with Future State: Gotham serving as the only title still releasing. However, Jason Todd and Violet Paige have crossed paths in an alternate timeline before, within the pages of Young Animal’s Mother Panic: Gotham A.D.

Mother Panic was launched into an alternate universe after DC and Young Animal’s Milk Wars crossover event. In this Gotham City, Batman has disappeared and Jason is the only surviving member of the Bat-Family, save for some of Gotham’s Sirens like Harley Quinn and Catwoman. Jason saw himself as the rightful heir to the mantle of Batman, starting a cult and fighting Mother Panic for the privilege to be the city’s sole savior, though he would eventually change his tune and become allies with the hero. Yet, Future State‘s Jason has proven to be more accommodating to this Panic, taking more after his experience working with others.

Jason has been on and led teams before, such as the Titans, Outlaws and currently Task Force Z (a zombie version of the suicide squad), but sidekicks haven’t served under the antihero alone much, save for heroes like Damian Wayne’s Robin on occasion and Scarlet from Batman & Robin. That series took place before the New 52 rebooted the DC Universe, but being that Dark Knights: Death Metal recently relaunched DC again, it is unclear if readers might see the original Mother Panic make a return from her alternate timeline.
