Red Hood has always been the more brutal member of the Bat Family, but a new Nightwing preview shows him breaking bad and violating his own new rule.
When Jason Todd returned as the Red Hood in comics, he became one of the greatest crime lords and vigilantes Gotham City had ever seen. In a preview for Nightwing 2021 Annual #1, he returns to his more ruthless roots.
The preview shows a car, containing an apparent criminal by the name of Mr. Lineker with armed bodyguards, getting ambushed by Red Hood and forced into a crash. As some of the car’s passengers attempt to crawl away, Red Hood shoots them each in the head, making a slow approach to the burning wreckage. The event was recorded, with Dick Grayson (Nightwing) and Barbara Gordon (Oracle/Batgirl) watching the footage of Jason–who removes his mask to reveal it is in fact him–break his own new rule: to not use guns.
Batman has had a “no guns” rule in comics for decades, with the belief serving as a staple of his character and ideology. However, when Jason returned from the grave in Batman #635, he no longer upheld his mentor’s teachings and frequently used dual pistols as his weapons of choice when in battle. During the “Cheer” storyline in Batman: Urban Legends, written by Chip Zdarksy with art by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira, Jason decided to give up using firearms after he impulsively killed a young boy’s father who was a drug dealer.
It is unclear at what point in time this Nightwing story takes place though, being that Jason has not only returned to using guns, but also to wearing his “Outlaw” outfit. While he was seen wearing this outfit alongside Nightwing in the past year’s Robin #5, “Cheer” ended with Bruce Wayne (Batman) gifting Jason with his older uniform, which he wore in backup stories of Detective Comics #1041 through #1043 before being thrown into the new zombie Suicide Squad series, Task Force Z. The cover for the annual issue features Nightwing and Red Hood, though the latter is in his Task Force Z armor, with no guns in sight.
Like many Batman and DC fans might note, there are many characters, heroes and villains that can change their appearance to look like others, whether it be through superpowered abilities or technological upgrades. Dick appears to have this hope that it is not really Jason committing the murders in the footage, before the removal of his mask seemingly proves otherwise.
