Marvel has announced “Reckoning War,” a long-teased saga that will embroil the Fantastic Four in January 2022.

Written by Dan Slott with artwork by Carlos Pacheco and Rachael Stott, “Reckoning War” was dubbed a story over 15 years in the making. The event will not only reveal the original secret war of the Marvel Universe, but also causes catastrophic repercussions that endanger every living being in reality.

The Reckoning War has long been teased in Slott’s various Marvel titles, stemming back to his 2005 run on She-Hulk where Jennifer Walters visited a possible future reality where Earth was ruined, the cosmos were under attack and members of Uatu the Watcher’s race were endangered by a mysterious threat. She-Hulk was hinted to have caused the events leading up to this so-called Reckoning War, though whether her role has changed over the course of nearly two decades of comics remains to be seen.

More recently, hints of the Reckoning War have re-emerged in select Marvel books written by Slott — for instance, 2020’s Empyre: Fantastic Four Fallout one-shot revealed a revived Uatu whispering, “There shall be… a reckoning.”

“If you track down all of the past [Reckoning War] clues on Marvel Unlimited or your long boxes, it’ll be fun!,” Slott wrote on Twitter. “But new readers will be able to jump right in — as the biggest, most cosmic, most all-out Marvel story ever kicks off — with the best characters in comics!”

Fantastic Four‘s “Reckoning War” begins in January 2022.
