Ranking Each Movie’s Villains by How Close They Came To Winning

[ad_1]

With every superhero, there’s almost always a villain ready to test them in some way. This much is even truer when talking about everyone’s favorite web-slinger, Spider-Man. Throughout each major film adaptation of this friendly neighborhood hero’s adventures, he’s been pitted against some of the most challenging enemies any hero has faced.

These villains have beaten him down, left him at a low point, and in some cases nearly gotten their way. But despite those odds, Spider-Man has emerged victorious every time. If anything, Spider-Man’s rogue gallery deserves at least some recognition for how close they got to victory.

10 Rhino Hardly Had A Chance, Even With His New Suit

The fight between Spider-Man and Rhino in his iconic Rhino suit didn’t happen on screen. It’s what closed off The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, if Spider-Man’s previous encounter with this villain is anything to go by, he wasn’t much of a threat.

This much is confirmed when the NYPD was able to successfully barricade his path in time for Spider-Man’s arrival. He’s even less threatening when children stand up to him. Given what The Amazing Spider-Man said in No Way Home about no longer pulling his punches, it can be safe to assume that Rhino was the first real victim to his more brutal side.

9 Without The Real Intent To Kill, Sandman Wasn’t That Bad

Flint Marko never intended to hurt anyone. All he wanted was to help his daughter. And if that meant committing petty thefts and stealing money, then he’d do it for her. This much is true when considering his combative interactions with Spider-Man, where he was more on the defensive side of the battle.

He was only on the offensive after his battle with the black-suited Spider-Man where he wanted revenge for nearly dying and having his heist ruined. Yet, despite all that, he was able to get forgiveness from Spider-Man. In No Way Home, Sandman was less of an antagonistic force until the final act, where he was after the spell that would send him back home to his daughter. Even then, he still had no murderous intent.

8 Vulture’s Wings Quickly Became His Undoing

Vulture for Film Spidey Villain ranks

One of the first villains the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man got to fight is none other than Adrian Toomes’s, Vulture. Adrian can be compared to Sandman in a lot of ways. For example, the crimes he’s committed are all in the name of his family.

Where things are different between the two starts with the fact Adrian has no qualms about killing people. This is shown when he murdered one of his men for threatening to expose his crimes. It’s also evidenced when he nearly killed Spider-Man in their encounters throughout Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, what ultimately became his undoing was his one-track mind when it came to obtaining weaponry to sell on the black market, including his lack of awareness about the damaged condition of his wings. He likely won’t be flying again any time soon.

7 The Unstable Attitude Of Mysterio Led To His Demise

Mysterio for Film Spidey Villain ranks

One of the villains that had the longest-lasting impact on the MCU’s Peter Parker is Mysterio. His final spiteful act is what set the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home into motion. Ousting Peter Parker’s identity made him spiral, which led to many consequences.

However, given how this didn’t occur until Mysterio had died, it’s more important to look at his actions while he was still alive. He had all but fooled Spider-Man into believing he was a hero and had obtained EDITH. He made a mistake targeting Peter Parker’s friends for uncovering the truth, which resulted in destructive conflict in London and put him in the path of Spider-Man one last time. Ultimately, his short-tempered attitude led to his demise.

6 Electro Should Have Realized What Spider-Man Was Planning

Electro for Film Spidey Villain ranks

One of the more powerful villains in Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery is the electrically charged Electro. His powers gave The Amazing Spider-Man an especially tough time, resulting in him needing to rework his web-shooters to withstand electricity.

While Max Dillon was a genius in his own right, his desire to be seen by people and not rejected was an instability that led to some short-sightedness on his part. In the climax of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, if Max was a little more level-headed, he could have realized that Spider-Man was trying to overcharge him to the point of his destruction.

5 Venom’s Weakness Was Quickly Exploited

Of all the adversaries the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has fought, Venom was the most intimate. The moment that symbiote bonded to him, a new side of Peter Parker was unleashed that was far more aggressive. If he didn’t come to his senses, it’s likely more damage would have befallen New York. But things weren’t over when the suit was overcome, especially not after it bonded to Eddie Brock and became Venom, who learned all the symbiote knew about Peter. With Sandman’s help, Venom nearly killed Spider-Man. But once Sandman was dealt with, Peter was able to overpower the symbiote by exploiting its weakness to sound.

4 If It Weren’t For Captain Stacy, Peter Wouldn’t Have Been Able To Cure The Lizard

Another villain who nearly beat Spider-Man was Dr. Curt Connors’, Lizard. As the Amazing Spider-Man’s first real villain, he proved quite the challenge – especially with his intelligence on top of his brute strength. By the end of their final battle, the Lizard had Spider-Man’s web-shooters destroyed and held him by the throat.  If Gwen Stacy’s father hadn’t stepped up to the plate to save Peter, he would’ve been killed by his first true foe.

3 Doc Ock Had Spider-Man By The Throat

Doc Ock for Film Spidey Villain ranks

Doctor Otto Octavius is a man driven to insanity from the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his experiment for a better energy source. This failure, on top of the death of his wife and the destruction of his inhibitor chip, led him to become the menacing Doc Ock that terrorized New York in Spider-Man 2. Of all the villains that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man had to face, he’s one that’s had a better track record of defeating him in direct fights. If Peter didn’t appeal to him in their final encounter, it’s clear that he would have easily crushed his throat.

2 Kingpin Managed To Kill Spider-Man

What’s more dangerous than villains who had a clear shot to kill Spider-Man? One that’s succeeded where all others have failed. Into The Spider-verse begins with the death of a Spider-Man at the hands of Kingpin.

Fisk’s plans to bring his family back at the cost of his reality would have succeeded if other Spider-People didn’t show up to foil his plan, and if Miles Morales didn’t step up. This version of Wilson Fisk possessed immense strength and influence, but where he ultimately failed is by focusing too much on his obsession with getting his family back.

1 Green Goblin Went For The Heart Of Three Different Spider-Men

Green Goblin for Film Spidey Villain ranks

The Green Goblin managed to massively impact the lives of three different Spider-Man with his actions. The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was his first main adversary in the original Spider-Man film, and apart from the brutal beating he delivered onto that Spider-Man, the manipulations of his son led to a tear in his friendship with Peter that would spiral out into the rest of that movie series.

Dean Dehaan’s version of the character also left a major impact on his version of Spider-Man by spitefully leading to the death of Gwen Stacy – something that would permanently haunt his Peter. Finally, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actions of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin would hurt another Spider-Man and leave him with nothing but his identity as the web-slinger by the end of the film.
