An underrated character from Season 2 upstages even the Mountain as Game of Thrones’ most terrifying character.
Between the gore and the number of murders, Game of Thrones can definitely be classified somewhere in the horror genre. Many fans would think that the zombified Gregor Clegane, otherwise known as the Mountain, is one of the most terrifying elements of the entire show, considering his grotesque appearance and terrifying behavior.
But another character, who is arguably much more creepy, flies under the radar. Maybe it’s because he’s hidden in an early season, or maybe it’s because he’s not nearly as imposing as the Mountain, but Pyat Pree is Game of Thrones’ most terrifying character.
Who Is Pyat Pree in Game of Thrones?
Pyat Pree is a warlock that resides in Qarth in the House of the Undying, a mysterious dwelling that houses other warlocks. Warlocks were once highly respected beings in Qarth, but over the generations, they’ve been reduced to mere tricksters and outcasts among the residents. Pree is also a member of the Thirteen, the governing council of Qarth, due to years of tradition and custom.
Pree claims to have mystical powers, and he definitely proves that he has the power of illusion during Season 2 of Game of Thrones. During his first real meeting with Daenerys Targaryen in Season 2, Episode 5, “The Ghost of Harrenhal,” he proudly showcases his talents by having her look into a jewel until she can see herself in its facets. After looking up, she then realizes that now there are two separate Pyat Prees talking to her. His illusions are jarring, giving Daenerys a negative first impression — and for good reason.
Pyat Pree Is Game of Thrones’ Most Terrifying Character
Daenerys was smart not to trust Pyat Pree; he’s much more than meets the eye. Besides his shocking illusions, he uses them for nefarious purposes. In Season 2, Episode 7, “A Man Without Honor,” Pree uses an illusion to create several duplicates of himself in order to slit the throat of every other member of the Thirteen so that Xaro Xhoan Daxos can become the King of Qarth. At the same moment, he admits to stealing Daenerys’ dragons. In this one intense scene, Pyat Pree shows his true colors — both as a self-serving psychopath and as a cold-blooded murderer.
Beyond his actions, his sinister reputation is enhanced by his truly gruesome appearance. He’s extremely thin, tall and absurdly pale for living in the middle of the desert. His features are dark and ghoulish, giving the impression of a ghost, not a warlock. His limbs are spindly and creepy, and he is altogether not pleasant to look at. It’s therefore so satisfying when he becomes the first victim of Daenerys’ dragons; ironic since Pree had claimed that his powers were being restored and strengthened because of the dragons’ birth.
Even though the Mountain may be the typical definition of terrifying, Pyat Pree embodies the word far more. His appearance in combination with his lethal and horrific actions easily makes him Game of Thrones’ most terrifying character.
