Prison Break ran for 12 years from 2005-2017. In Prison Break, Lincoln Burrows is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and sentenced to death. Michael Scofield, his brother and structural engineer, creates an intricate plan to get himself incarcerated in the same prison, Fox River, and break them out. Lincoln Burrows has been framed by a government body called ‘The Company.’ After years of planning, Michael walks into a bank with a gun (with little intention of taking any money or harming anybody) and waits for the police.
Michael Scofield has low-latent inhibition, a mental condition allowing him to contain and comprehend much more information, basically making him a genius. Michael’s body is covered in approximately 24 large CGI tattoos that encompass the blueprints to Fox River prison. There’s a prison’s worth of characters and more across five seasons of Prison Break– some good, some bad.
10 Alexander Mahone – FBI Agent
Alex Mahone is the FBI agent forced by The Company to pursue Michael, Lincoln, and those affiliated. Mahone possesses brilliant deduction skills. Despite chasing Scofield and Burrows, Alex Mahone holds a special place in viewer’s hearts. His troubling background and blackmail from The Company leaves audiences sympathising with him. Ultimately, Mahone saves Michael when they’re both imprisoned in Sona.
Much like Brad Bellick, a disgusting prison guard abusing his power, Mahone gets a taste of his own medicine when he’s imprisoned in Sona. Brad Bellick lost his job for corruption and also winds up in Sona, stripped of his dignity and repeatedly abused, being left dangerously hungry and thirsty. Bellick and Mahone’s karma gave them both great character arcs, finally understanding what it’s like to be on the other side of the bars.
9 Veronica Donovan – Lincoln’s Lawyer
Veronica Donovan is Lincoln’s lawyer and close friend. She promises to help him – despite her trust in the CCTV footage – looking deeper into his case. The further she looks, the weirder it gets and Veronica is convinced Lincoln was framed. Veronica Donovan is a fiercely loyal and resilient person. In spite of the dangers of investigating the case (threats by Secret Service Agents), she keeps pursuing justice and keeps LJ Burrows (Lincoln’s son) safe.
Viewers were heartbroken when Veronica was shot by Secret Service Agents in Prison Break, not only because of her death, but because she had just discovered Terrence Steadman living in a remote house that she couldn’t escape.
8 T-Bag (Theodore Bagwell) – Criminal
Robert Knepper plays the vile criminal, T-Bag, who’s incarcerated in Fox River for multiple counts of kidnapping, rape, pedophilia, and murder. He’s also tortured animals, committed arson, and leads the Aryan Gang in Fox River – a white supremacist group. Robert Knepper’s portrayal of T-Bag is phenomenal – he embodies a disgusting, psychopathic and relentless criminal.
The character has literally no good traits, but T-Bag is great for his depth, complexity, and well-written lines. Through Prison Break, T-Bag offers slight glimpses of humanity, and audiences learn it’s his traumatic and abusive childhood that’s made him so vile. T-Bag was delivered portrayed by Robert Knepper.
7 L.J Burrows – Lincoln’s Son
L.J burrows starts Prison Break with no relationship to his father, Lincoln, and his father’s incarceration causes him to rebel. He was frequently threatened and endangered by The Company, with his mother and step-father murdered in front of him. L.J is initially weak, but ends up on the run for the longest time – ending up with his father’s fate, imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. Lincoln and LJ’s relationship is better and more trusting towards the end of Prison Break, and finally he catches a break, able to return to school.
6 C-Note (Benjamin Franklin) – Fox River Prisoner
C-Note’s character is one of the saddest in Prison Break. He was serving in the US Army when he discovers the illegal torture of inmates and reports it to his boss, who dishonorably discharges C-Note from the army. Ashamed, C-Note tries to provide for his family by resorting to theft. For most of his sentence in Fox River, C-Note’s wife and child are unaware he’s in prison.
C-Note first appeared when helping Schofield obtain a drug to seem diabetic – giving him reason to go to the infirmary. In Prison Break, C-Note is blackmailed into suicide, encouraged to snitch on Michael’s whereabouts, but he never gives up and proves to be one of Prison Break‘s most persevering characters.
5 Sucre – Michael’s Cellmate
Fernando Sucre is the loveable Puerto Rican inmate imprisoned in Fox River for robbing a liquor store. He’s good-natured, kind-hearted, and eager to escape Fox River to be with his pregnant girlfriend (and love of his life) Maricruz. He and Michael develop a strong friendship, and Sucre is willing to risk everything to protect Michael.
Sucre is eternally grateful to him, and is one of few characters who doesn’t use Michael or his knowledge of the escape to gain an advantage. Prison Break runs for 5 seasons and Sucre saved Michael’s life several times, serving as a key character in the Fox River and Sona escape.
4 Lincoln Burrows – The Other Protagonist
Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) is framed for the murder of the Vice-President’s brother, Terrence Steadman. Footage of Lincoln aiming and firing a gun at Terrence Steadman ends up being the court’s air-tight evidence, but the video is fake: Lincoln pointed the gun but never fired, and Terrence Steadman isn’t dead. Understandably, season 1 Burrows has little hope of proving his innocence before his impending execution, and has accepted his fate.
Through Prison Break, he becomes prepared to find the truth: who set him up. Lincoln Burrows is also unlike the criminals in Fox River, having a good relationship with his guards and even fitghting to protect one during a prison riot. He often lets everybody else run, fighting until the end to ensure other people’s safety.
3 Sara Tancredi – Doctor At Fox River
Visiting the infirmary was an important part of Michael’s escape plan, so he often visited Dr. Sara Tancredi for his insulin shot. Through their regular meetings, Michael begins to flirt with her, and despite her initial attempts to reject his kindness and maintain a formal relationship, she doesn’t consider him to be like the others. Their relationship through Prison Break develops romantically and is tested when Michael asks her to leave the door unlocked after her shift.
Disgusted at her actions, she overdoses on Morphine, loses her medical license, and is soon another target of The Company. Sara is devoted to Michael and ends up on the run with him, eventually marrying him and birthing their first child: Michael Jr. Sara is loyal, true-hearted, and one of the best and most important parts of the Prison Break cast.
2 Charles Westmoreland – Fox River Prisoner
Charles Westmoreland is a mysterious character in Prison Break, as other prisoners wonder if Charles is the infamous D.B Cooper. D.B Cooper is an aircraft hijacker who received a ransom of $5 million and leapt from the plane into the southern Cascades, never caught. Charles Westmoreland is incarcerated in Fox River for vehicular manslaughter, but is otherwise a sweet, old man whose days are spent with his pet cat, Marilyn, who he was given for companionship years prior.
As the Fox River gang break out, Charles attacks Brad Bellick, a prison guard, who discovers their tunnel and is impaled by a piece of glass. Close to breaking out, Charles suffers from major blood loss and lets the others go ahead. Charles implies to Michael Scofield that the money is still out there, but makes Michael promise to find his daughter. Charles is a sweet and gentle character, and his death is devastating.
1 Michael Scofield – Lincoln’s Brother
Michael Scofield is loyal and brave, often sacrificing himself for others. His low-latent inhibition and compassion stem from a traumatic childhood where he was often locked in a pitch-black room with no mental stimuli and now can’t block out any environmental stimulus. Lincoln and Michael’s escape from Fox River included Sucre, Benjamin Franklin (C-Note), T-Bag, John Abruzzi, Tweener, and Haywire. Each character had a role to play in the escape. Michael Scofield’s character is complex and hates injustice. In a prison of criminals, Michael Scofield is by far the most understanding.
