CBR has an exclusive look at Christian Ward and Dustin Nguyen’s covers for the first issue of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino’s Primordial #1.

The fan-favorite creative team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino (Green Arrow, Old Man Logan and the Eisner Award-winning Gideon Falls) are launching a new Image Comics series titled Primordial, and CBR has the exclusive reveal of two variant covers for the first issue by artists Christian Ward and Dustin Nguyen.

Both covers by Ward and Nguyen feature one of the two monkeys sent into space by the USA in its Cold War with the USSR. Described as a mixture of 2001: A Space Odyssey meets We3Primordial is a six-issue miniseries from Sweet Tooth creator Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. The USSR and USA are in the middle of a race to reach space, with the USSR sending a dog named Laika into Earth’s orbit in 1957. After two years, the USA responds by sending monkeys Able and Baker into orbit as well. Even though all three animals never returned to Earth, they didn’t die. Somehow they were taken, and now they’re heading back home.

“It’s always great to see other artists interpret the world and story that Andrea and I have created, and especially great to see two amazing artists like Dustin and Christian bring our characters to new life!” Lemire added.
