Powers Rangers Completely Rewrites Master Vile’s Origin

[ad_1]

Another classic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villain has just been given a brand new origin story, and it could change everything.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness #1 by Frank Gogol, Simone Ragazzoni, Igor Monti, Sabrina Del Grosso, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.

The world of the Power Rangers has been suffering what seems like an unending series of attacks from increasingly powerful threats lately. Currently, the Empyreals have proven to be the most pressing threat with their proclivity towards annihilating entire planets at a time. Long before the Empyreals acted as the heralds of Dark Specter, though, there was Master Vile. And now, that villain’s renewed origin could have wide-reaching implications for every corner of the Mighty Morphin universe.

Edge of Darkness is quick to introduce readers to Lady Fienna and her young daughter Rita, who were on the run from Master Vile and his army of Tenga Warriors thousands of years ago. The villain had high hopes that Rita might serve as the unwitting sacrifice in an evil ritual, but found his plot foiled with the appearance of the Phantom Ranger.

After rescuing Rita and Lady Fienna, and getting himself gravely wounded in the process, the Phantom Ranger was brought by Fienna to the Masterforge where he could be properly healed. There she also explained to him just what her connection to the Morphin Grid was, and as it turned out it was a connection that Master Vile once shared with her. Before he became the monster that was hunting them, he was Lady Fienna’s husband Eldin. Together they studied the Morphin Grid and its energies, eventually finding themselves capable of peering into it directly. While Lady Fienna saw a beautiful vision of her daughter as a powerful sorcerous, Eldin only saw the Rita Repulsa that fans know all too well. He also heard a voice, and it belonged to none other than Dark Specter.

It was through Dark Specter’s influence that Eldin eventually transformed into the monstrous Master Vile of the comics, though this is a far different take on the character’s origin on the small screen. While he and Lady Fienna have always been the parents of Rita Repulsa, Master Vile was also always a monster on the original television series, albeit one who proved capable of romancing a powerful and undoubtedly good sorceress. Not only does the fact that Master Vile was once simply a man change him as a character, it also changes the nature of monsters in the Power Rangers universe entirely.

As Lady Fienna explains it, Dark Specter is not just a monster himself, but rather a manifestation of the opposite energies of those of the Morphin Grid. Whatever name that might have, Dark Specter is quite literally made of it. As such, there is no question whether or not energy can create monsters, especially considering the Empyreals are supposedly the dark mirror entities of the Emissaries Three. Instead, the question is in whether or not this power could give rise to something closer to the Power Rangers themselves. Something that they might not be able to prepare for whatsoever.

Rita Repulsa had famously used a simple spell to turn Tommy Oliver into her own personal super-soldier when he first appeared on Earth as the Green Ranger, and as impressive as that was, it is a far cry from transforming someone into a literal monster. Even Lord Zedd’s Dark Rangers were made from a combination of his own powers and those of the Green Chaos Crystal.

If Dark Specter is indeed able to twist men into monsters merely by whispering dark nothings in their ears, then he is surely capable of bringing to life beings of his own creation with little more than a thought. As hard as it is to imagine that making such a simple change to a lesser known villain’s origin could have such an impact on the rest of the Power Rangers universe, it looks like that is precisely the case. How far down this rabbit hole the Rangers dig is yet to be seen, but there is no doubt that any amount of scratching past the surface will uncover horrors that the heroes couldn’t possibly imagine.
