As the early history of the Power Rangers’ Zordon and other Guardians of Eltar is revealed, a massive conspiracy comes to light.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Mighty Morphin #10, available now from BOOM! Studios.
The Power Rangers are no strangers to deeply held secrets or outright betrayals, even among their own teammates. Despite the myriad of shocking revelations that have rocked their world in recent months, the foundations of their world have just been shaken about the true nature of the Guardians of Eltarh, as revealed by Lord Zedd’s retelling of their history in Mighty Morphin #10, by Ryan Parrott, Dan Mora, Raúl Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernández and Ed Dukeshire.
Thousands of years ago, the Guardians of Eltar uncovered the ancient Bandora Palace and the monks who guarded the Zeo Crystal. This artifact of unimaginable power had become a thing of legends and as such, the Guardians were divided on how to proceed with it. Zophram, the Supreme Guardian, made the ultimate decision to guard the Zeo Crystal, instead of trying to harness its power without the Council of Eltar. Unfortunately, the Council’s famously bureaucratic reputation proved to be more true than ever, and their indecisiveness drove Zophram to take charge of the situation without their permission. The Guardians were only narrowly able to prevent the artifact from falling into the clutches of Dark Specter, but in doing so Zordon nearly lost his life.
When even this didn’t sway the Council in any particular direction, Zophram again defied their orders by going to claim the Zeo Crystal for himself and put an end to this senseless war they were barely fighting. In his blind fury the Supreme Guardian marched down the halls of Bandora Palace towards his prize, only to discover that someone else had already beat him to it, which raises several questions about the Guardians and their true nature.
Upon touching the Zeo Crystal, Zophram is overcome with a spell cast upon it previously by Zartus. Under the cover of darkness, Zartus had convinced one of the clerics to help him protect the Zeo Crystal with Flame of Truth, which turns out to be much more than what its name might suggest. As the power surges through Zophram, a massive explosion that rocks the entire surface of the planet erupts. When the Silver Guardian finally uncovers his old friend from the wreckage, Zophram has been reduced to a ghoulish, unrecognizable version of his former self.
It doesn’t take long for more soldiers to arrive and offer to fetch a medic, but Zartus kills them where they stand in a brutal display of violence. Zartus knows that there is no one left to trust. Someone who knew about the Guardians and Council cursed the crystal, and a different Zartus appears to be the guilty party.
Watching from a ship high above the planet’s surface is another Zartus, presumably the same one who cursed the Zeo Crystal. Assuming this is true, it’s easy to make the assumption that this is also the same Zartus who has been promoted to the rank of Supreme Guardian in the present. Though Zordon is fully aware of his old friend’s current position, he has no idea that Zartus is also in command of the current Empyreal threat.
These are the same Empyreals that have managed to find a suitable host for Dark Specter, which adds another layer of devastating intrigue to what has quickly become a conspiracy that clouds the foundation of the Rangers and their true purpose. There might not be any telling exactly where all of this leads to for the Power Rangers of the present, but there is no world in which it is any good.
