Mighty Morphin Power Rangers just gave Lord Zedd a surprising new origin that dramatically rewrites his past and his connection to the team.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Mighty Morphin #10, available now from Boom! Studios.
The Power Rangers have faced some truly frightening foes over the years, though none have made the war between them so personal as Lord Zedd. This interstellar tyrant has long been one of the Rangers’ most fearsome foes, with an army of twisted minions and his own immense sheer power. With his incredible strength, Zedd has been able to overtake even the Rangers’ own hometown, and while he didn’t keep it for long, he took the current Bronze Guardian of Eltar, a being from the same alien race as Zordon, into his custody. And now, he’s just revealed why they’re far more alike than she realizes by telling her his origin in Mighty Morphin #10 by Ryan Parrott, Dan Mora, Raúl Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernández and Ed Dukeshire.
Thousands of years ago, the Guardians and Council of Eltar came to a disagreement that could not be resolved with words alone. After discovering the legendary Zeo Crystal, the Guardians were barely able to prevent the impossibly powerful artifact from falling into the clutches of evil. Unfortunately, stopping Dark Specter’s assassin nearly cost Zordon his life. When this shocking development didn’t spurn the Council towards finally taking action, Zophram the Supreme Guardian decided to do so with neither their blessing nor guidance. Zophram traveled back to Bandora Palace and proceeded to attempt to claim the power of the Zeo Crystal for himself.
While this action was meant to put an end to Dark Specter’s reign, it did something far worse by giving Zophram the injuries that would turn him into Lord Zedd.
The Zeo Crystal had already been enchanted with the Flame of Truth by Zartus under the cover of darkness, and now that spell has burned Zophram nearly to his core. A massive explosion engulfs Bandora Palace before sweeping across the surface of the Moon entirely, leaving a once lush landscape completely barren save for the palace itself. In the aftermath of the blast, Zartus kills the same guards he had previously trusted with his life, certain that someone set this trap for them to find, and takes Zophram to recover from his wounds as best he can. ]
As the events of the past come into focus, so does the new grotesque form of the Supreme Guardian, which ostensibly confirms him to be Lord Zedd.
This is a devastating truth to uncover, though it isn’t entirely removed from Zedd’s origin in the original 1993 television series. On the show, Zedd had in fact once been more humanoid in appearance and coming into contact with the Zeo Crystal which reduced him to his gruesomely iconic form. However, the Lord Zedd of the small screen was neither Eltarian nor a hero before his transformation. Now that the BOOM! Studios timeline has taken this particular turn, the nature of both Zedd and the Rangers’ place in the universe has changed entirely.
For the moment, there are still questions about what happened with Zartus, as well as whether Zordon knows that one of his old allies became the Rangers’ greatest villain. However, these will almost certainly be answered sooner than later. Despite their history, this may even pave a way for Zedd and Zordon’s Rangers to work together to take down their common enemies in the war against Dark Specter and the incoming threat of the god-like Empyreals. While it’s not clear how any of this will play out just yet, this revelation about Lord Zedd’s past stands as one of the most surprising developments in this Power Rangers timeline.
