Power Rangers: Edge of Darkness has just given one classic villain a new origin story that could reshape the very face of the Power Rangers universe.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness #1 by Frank Gogol, Simone Ragazzoni, Igor Monti, Sabrina Del Grosso, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.

The latest chapter into the Power Rangers saga has arrived, and with Edge of Darkness comes a plethora of shocking twists and stunning revelations. Alongside classic heroes entering the comic book fold in ways they never have before comes new origins to some of the greatest villains in Mighty Morphin history. Chief among these is none other than Rita Repulsa, whose own beginning has just been given an overhaul that could change the face of the universe itself.

Over ten thousand years ago, a young Rita and her mother Lady Fienna were on the run from the Tenga Warriors and their ruler, Master Vile. These monstrous foot soldiers had come looking for the child who was key to Master Vile’s plan to bring his own lord Dark Specter into our world. Though Rita and Fienna were eventually caught, the ritual to transform Rita into Dark Specter’s mortal vessel was foiled by the sudden appearance of the enigmatic fan-favorite Phantom Ranger. Thanks to the Ranger’s intervention, Rita and Fienna were able to escape with their new ally, and the latter of the two was more than happy to explain just why her daughter was so important to Dark Specter’s forces.

Much like her television counterpart, the Rita of the comics was the daughter of Lady Fienna and Master Vile, though unlike the original series, her father wasn’t always a monster himself. In this timeline, Master Vile had once been a man named Eldin with whom she studied the Morphin Grid and its energies. After many years toiling away, the two discovered the means to peer within the Grid itself, and when they did each of them saw vastly different visions of their daughter’s future. Where Fienna saw Rita having grown up to be a wise and benevolent sorceress like herself, Eldin saw Rita as fans know her best. He also heard a voice calling out to him, and after so much time spent entertaining that voice Eldin became corrupted by its influence and bent to Dark Specter’s will, leading him to relentlessly hunt his own child across the cosmos.

This isn’t far from the origin that Rita Repulsa has had, as even in the original series she had been stolen away from her mother by Master Vile. It was under his tutelage that she became the evil witch that fans love to hate, and it seems that is the exact same case in the comics, even if the circumstances surrounding her earliest days aren’t exactly the same. As sad as it is to see a young, hopeful Rita be whisked away knowing what her ultimate fate is already destined to be, the revelation that she could have had something better than what she has come to know opens the door for a whole new version of her to walk through in the future.
