Poké maniacs can finally play new Pokémon games and watch Pokémon anime on one device again with the release of Switch’s Pokémon TV app.
Pokémon fans who have dreamed of the convenience of having New Pokémon Snap and the new Pokémon anime on one device can now start looking for a new easy to achieve dream, as the Pokémon TV app is now available to download on Nintendo Switch.
The new app gives Poké maniacs access to hundreds of episodes of the long-running anime series, as well as a rotating selection of movies, animated specials, video coverage of tournaments for both the video game and the trading card game, and other video content. The free app was previously available on iOS and Android devices, but this release marks its debut on a Nintendo console. The app can be downloaded from Nintendo’s eShop.
Netflix recently announced that they had secured the exclusive streaming rights to the next season of the Pokémon anime, which put hardcore Nintendo fanboys without any other connected devices in a bind, since for some reason there is still no official Netflix app on the Nintendo Switch. With the new Pokémon TV app, those people can at least catch up with Ash’s past adventures.
In addition to the new season of the anime, Netflix also recently announced that it is producing a live-action series based on Nintendo and Game Freak’s popular franchise. Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson is reportedly helming the project. It is unknown if this series will ever come to the Pokémon TV app.
Pokémon is currently celebrating the 25th anniversary of the series’ debut way back in 1996 on the original, gigantic Game Boy. The series’ big anniversary has faced some setbacks this year due to the on-going pandemic, as The Pokémon Company recently announced the closure of many of its Japanese Pokémon Center superstores, but the game’s developers continue to plug away at the series: DS remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will launch on the Nintendo Switch this fall, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which evolves the franchise in a new, open-world direction, is scheduled to launch shortly afterwards in January. Pokémon Unite, Nintendo and Tencent’s attempt at breaking into the highly competitive but very profitable MOBA market, will also launch on iOS and Android devices this fall. The game launched on the Nintendo Switch earlier this summer, and despite criticisms about the amount of microtransactions the game has, it has generally be seen as another success for the multi-billion dollar franchise.
