Pokémon: Every Generation, Ranked By Their Champions

[ad_1]

In each and every Pokémon game, no matter the story or the direction that the game takes the player in, the end goal is always the same. The player needs to beat the Champion of that region and replace them as the new Champion.

Every Champion battle has its own degree of difficulty, but some are also more logical or exciting than others, which usually comes down to the team of the Pokémon that they use. Some Champions are committed to a certain type, while others became the Champion with a more well-balanced team of the strongest Pokémon out there.

8 Generation V: Alder’s Team Was Strange & Iris’s Dragon-Team Was Easy Enough To Counter

In Pokémon Black & White, the Champion is Alder before he retires in Black 2 & White 2, which results in Iris taking on the Champion role. Alder has a bizarre team with three Bug-types in Escavalier, Accelgor, and Volcarona, alongside Bouffalant, Druddigon, and Vanilluxe. It doesn’t look like an intimidating team on paper, but at least he has some variety in terms of typing.

Iris is a bit more straightforward with her Dragon-type team. Similar to Lance’s battle in Gen II, players only need to bring some Dragon counters, and that shouldn’t be too difficult.

7 Generation II: Lance Was A Dragon-Type Champion With Not Enough Dragon-Types To Choose From

Despite being an Elite Four Member in the Gen I games, Lance ranks up to Champion status in Gold, Silver & Crystal. While plenty of players have struggled with this final battle, it can be easy enough with appropriate preparation.

By Gen II, the Dragon typing only had two fully-evolved Pokémon, Dragonite and Kingdra. For whatever reason, Lance didn’t even have a Kingdra and instead had three Dragonites, along with three non-Dragon types in Aerodactyl, Charizard, and Gyarados. This was due to their dragon-like designs and nature.

6 Generation VI: Diantha’s Mega Gardevoir Could Cause Problems

Diantha’s battle has the potential to be among the easier Champion battles of the Pokémon series, with a more difficult Elite Four leading up to her battle. This aside, her Mega Gardevoir is her prized Pokémon and is by far her most dangerous weapon.

Her varied team, also consisting of Goodra, Aurorus, Gourgeist, Hawlucha, and Tyrantrum, looks intimidating enough. However, with enough planning and the appropriate type coverage, beating the Kalos Champion is certainly achievable.

5 Generation VII: Kukui & Hau Were Tricky Final Hurdles Before Becoming Champion In Alola

The Sun & Moon games are outliers in the series, in the sense that the Champion battles are not against a reigning Champion but instead against another trainer competing for the title. In Sun & Moon, this is Professor Kukui, but in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, it switches to the player’s rival, Hau.

Kukui will always have five of the same Pokémon, with the sixth depending on the player’s chosen starter. Hau similarly has a starter Pokémon and an Eeveelution that change depending on the player’s choice. Similar to Blue in the Gen I games, it helps that players will battle their rival several times throughout their journey before facing them in a high-stakes Champion battle. Both Hau and Kukui are of similar difficulty, and they will both hit hard using Z-moves with their starter Pokémon.

4 Generation VIII: Leon Had Exciting Team Variations And His Trusty Charizard

Pokémon Sword & Shield are generally considered to be easy games, from the battles themselves to the shared experience gained by the entire party after each battle. However, one battle in the game that is not easy is the battle against the Champion, Leon.

Leon’s Gigantamax Charizard is known to be one of the toughest Pokémon of any Champion, and his other team members of Aegislash, Dragapult, and Haxorus are no slouches either. Leon’s two other Pokémon depend on the player’s choice of starter, making for three very interesting and different battles on each playthrough.

3 Generation III: Wallace’s Water Types Were Easy Enough To Prepare For, But Steven Was Tricky

In Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire, Wallace is the Sootopolis Gym Leader and Steven is the Champion. Meanwhile in Emerald, Juan takes over the Sootopolis Gym as Wallace becomes the Champion.

Steven’s Steel-type team can be rather troublesome, with his Metagross being especially difficult to get past. His non-Steel-type Cradily, Armaldo, and Claydol all present their own problems, and his Skarmory will often start with Spikes to influence the rest of the battle. Wallace’s Champion battle, on the other hand, is very direct and predictable. With a team of six Water-types, Wallace will set up the rain, and his Wailord and Gyarados can be hard to overcome without any strong super-effective moves.

2 Generation I: The Final Battle With Blue Was The Culmination Of An Epic Rivalry

In the Gen I games, Blue has different teams depending on the starter Pokémon chosen by the player, but the core three of Pidgeot, Alakazam, and Rhydon stay the same in Blue & Red. However, his team in Pokémon Yellow is different, with him using Eeveelutions rather than starters.

As the player’s main rival, there are several battles with Blue as the story progresses, so the more paly can gradually understand how to manage and deal with his team as it gets stronger each time. The final Champion battle, however, is not easy and will need careful planning beforehand.

1 Generation IV: The Battle Against Champion Cynthia Is Universally Feared

Player Versus Cynthia Pokemon Platinum Champion

Cynthia gets a reputation for being one of the hardest trainers to beat in all of Pokémon, and there is good reason for that. Her teams in Diamond, Pearl, & Platinum are formidable, with them all being around or above level 60. Her Garchomp and Lucario are particularly known for causing everyone problems.

Cynthia also appears in Black & White and Sun & Moon, with several of the same Pokémon, and she is still a frustrating trainer to battle on every single occasion. Cynthia’s overall difficulty level as a Champion may be exaggerated to an extent, but that doesn’t change the fact that she is the toughest Champion to defeat.
