Pokémon: 10 Ways Ash Has Improved As A Trainer

[ad_1]

In Pokémon, Ash’s journey as a trainer is still ongoing as he tries to become a Pokémon master. Even after journeying with different companions, encountering various tournaments and gyms, and even battling evil teams like Team Rocket, it’s clear that Ash’s journey won’t be ending anytime soon. However, it’s also clear that despite how long the journey has been so far, he has been growing as a trainer overall.

Despite the occasional stumbles Ash made during his journey, many fans agree that he has improved as a trainer over time. Ash’s improvements, though gradual, range from him learning to earn the respect of his Pokémon to becoming a more decisive and strategic trainer to win his battles. His consistent learning and growth throughout the series only mean that he’ll grow stronger, no matter what obstacles he and his Pokémon face together.

10 Ash Learned To Earn The Respect Of His Pokémon

Early fans of the anime will remember that Ash didn’t always get along with Pikachu. In fact, the first episode has them outright not getting along at all until Ash earns Pikachu’s respect by defending it from a flock of deadly Spearow. Ash’s troubles with Pokémon didn’t end there, however. He also had trouble earning Charizard’s respect as a trainer despite being qualified to do so and had to do much more than have enough badges to earn its respect. This paid off when Ash helped Charizard recover from being frozen after a battle with Tad’s Poliwrath, reminding Charizard of all the things Ash had done for him since picking him up as a Charmander.

9 Ash Learned To Work With Others And Not Be A Lone Ranger

The journey of a Pokémon trainer is often a lonely one, but Ash thankfully has a plethora of companions and friends that travel with him throughout the series. This includes Misty, Brock, May, Max, Dawn, and more. However, he didn’t always have an easy time working with them in situations such as tag battles, and this often led to his and his partner’s defeat, especially when working with Misty and Dawn. Despite initial struggles, Ash learned to work with the people he tag-battled with, and this resulted in some awesome victories.

8 Ash Learned To Pick Up Different Battling Strategies To Win His Battles

At the beginning of the series, Ash knew the basics of type advantages, but he quickly realized that winning a battle meant more than that. Over time, he learned to find ways to trap the opposing Pokémon or confuse them. He also tried adopting other battle strategies to either overcome those same people in battle or found ways to counter their smooth moves.

The hard work especially paid off during his time in Alola by becoming the Champion after a lot of tough battles against strong trainers that required some serious strategic work.

7 Ash Realized Which Pokémon Were Better Off With And Without Him

There were some points in Ash’s journey where he realized that trading away a Pokémon did him and the Pokémon more of a disservice than a benefit, such as when he briefly traded Buttterfree for the Gentleman’s Raticate. However, there were a few other occasions where he realized that his Pokémon were better left elsewhere, such as trading his Aipom for Dawn’s Buizel due to their differing interests.

6 Ash Learned To Care For His Pokémon Properly

At the beginning of the series, Ash wasn’t sure how to properly care for his Pokémon. If it wasn’t for Brock constantly helping him care for his Pokémon in the beginning due to Ash’s lack of experience, it’s unclear how well-off said Pokémon would be. However, even long after Brock permanently left Ash’s side as a companion, it’s clear that Ash is experienced enough to know the basics of taking care of Pokémon, such as knowing when they’re far too tired to battle and need care at the closest Pokémon Center. Fans think that his early experiences journeying with Misty and Brock, who were both already experienced with Pokémon, partially helped Ash in this area.

5 Ash Learned To Be More Decisive As A Trainer

Ash occasionally struggled with making the right decisions for himself as a trainer and for his Pokémon. This is shown early on when he briefly traded Butterfree for the Gentleman’s Raticate, only to regret the decision afterward and ask for it back.

However, Ash grew more decisive as a trainer in later seasons of the anime, which helped him improve his battling strategies in the series. He even becomes able to decide which Pokémon to use for bigger battles such as championships.

4 Ash Learned That Resting On His Laurels Was Not An Option

Just because Ash has a lot of experience as a Pokémon trainer doesn’t mean that he’ll automatically become the best or the most respected trainer. Ash learns this lesson the hard way when his Charizard refuses to obey him during the Indigo League, costing him an important match against Ritchie and his Pikachu. Through experiences such as this one, Ash realized that consistent learning, training, and growing with his Pokémon, as well as taking the time to earn their trust and respect, was the only way he would continue growing and succeeding in his Pokémon journey.

3 Ash Learned To Have Some Respect For His Rivals, No Matter Their Differences

Paul and Ash From Pokémon

Ash encounters many rivals throughout the series, and it’s inevitable that he’ll encounter more as his journey continues. Some rivals were friendly, like Ritchie, but there were also others like Paul and Gary that were less-than-kind towards Ash (and even towards their own Pokémon, in Paul’s case).

No matter how many fights Ash got into with them, however, he eventually learned to have some respect for his rivals due to the dedication they had to their goals as trainers, even if they had differing goals and/or strategies to take them where they wanted to go. The rivals, in turn, also learned to have respect for Ash as a worthy rival in their own ways.

2 Ash Learned To Stick Up For What Was Right, No Matter How Dangerous It Was

There are many instances throughout the anime and the movies where Ash finds himself in sticky situations or notices others in need of help. This includes dealing with Team Rocket’s evil plans to fending off other evil groups like Team Galactic and Team Plasma. No matter how dangerous things got, Ash was determined to do right by those who were and/or could be affected by evildoers. If it wasn’t for Ash doing so, there was no guarantee that someone else would step in and save the day (or the world) from others’ harmful deeds.

1 Ash Learned To Have Fun During His Journey

Being a Pokémon trainer can be tough, so it’s important for them and their Pokémon to have some fun along the way. Ash learned that though his journey as a Pokémon trainer is important, it’s also just as important to take a step back and relax once in a while. Though Ash does go through some tough training with his fellow Pokémon, he also makes time for them to just chill out and relax. He even uses this time to cheer on his companions for their important events, such as Dawn’s Pokémon Contests.
