PlayStation’s Bungie Acquisition Was Not a Response to Xbox/Activision Deal

[ad_1]

PlayStation is not purchasing Destiny developers Bungie as a response to Microsoft’s recent deal to acquire the massive publisher Activision Blizzard.

Sony did not buy Destiny developer Bungie for its PlayStation consoles because of Xbox’s recent Activision Blizzard deal.

Christopher Dring reported on Twitter that Sony had been planning the acquisition for a while. “The deal was in the works for the past 5/6 months,” Dring said. “It’s not a reaction to the Take-Two/Zynga or Microsoft/Activision deals.” PlayStation’s hefty purchase, valued at $3.6 billion, comes just two weeks after Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard for almost $70 billion

“The motivation behind Sony’s acquisition of Bungie is to help boost their abilities to make live-service, multiplatform games,” He added, “Equally, Sony unlocks the potential to Bungie to strengthen its technical capabilities and the prospect of taking its games to movies/TV.”

Following the purchase, Dring spoke about the possibility of further business. “Jim Ryan told me we should expect more when it comes to further PlayStation acquisitions.” Ryan is the current President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

In purchasing Bungie, Sony has acquired the developers of Destiny franchise, an increasingly popular live-service looter-shooter. The series was initially published by Activision, going on to be a self-published title in 2019 after the two companies split. The original Destiny game was released in 2014 on PlayStation and Xbox consoles before its sequel hit shelves three years later.

Despite joining Sony, Bungie was once largely associated with Xbox. In June 2000, Microsoft acquired the developers along with its Halo project, resulting in Master Chief’s first adventure becoming an Xbox exclusive. Bungie eventually split from Microsoft in 2007 and released its final Halo game in 2010, with 343 Industries taking over all subsequent releases.

The Sony deal will provide some comfort to PlayStation owners after Microsoft’s significant purchase of Activision Blizzard. The publisher is best known for Call of Duty, a first-person shooter franchise that has released titles on PlayStation and Xbox consoles since 2003. The most recent title, Call of Duty: Vanguard was released in November 2021. Despite its critics, Call of Duty has become the best-selling first-person shooter franchise of all time, selling more than 400 million copies worldwide to date.

Although Microsoft’s latest acquisition has put some customers off Sony’s consoles, fans of Call of Duty need not worry. On Jan. 22, an Xbox executive promised that Call of Duty will remain multiplatform. This means PlayStation owners will not miss out on upcoming titles. The same can also be said for Destiny after Bungie released a statement confirming that future releases will not become PlayStation exclusives.
