Sony has announced a new PlayStation showcase, highlighting games to release through the holiday and beyond. What does Sony have in store for fans?
After missing out on E3 2021 and only making a brief appearance at Gamescom, PlayStation has finally returned to announce that it will hold a new showcase next week. Gamers have been yearning for a larger showcase, especially with Sony’s holiday lineup looking thin. Now, after the impressive showings that Microsoft and Nintendo had at their respective E3 conferences, it appears PlayStation is finally ready to bring us further into the future of the PlayStation 5.
Gamers should have plenty to look forward to at this event. There will be showcases of titles, both big and small, set for release in 2021 and onward. We’ll see games from Sony’s own first-party studios, and even some showings from major third-party publishers. PlayStation looks ready to reward gamers for their patience with a big event.
How To Watch PlayStation Showcase 2021
The PlayStation Showcase will take place on Thursday, September 9th. It will begin at 1:00 PM Pacific Time / 4:00 PM EST / 9:00 PM BST / 10:00 PM CEST. The event will be broadcasted live on YouTube and Twitch. Sony has not commented on whether it will allow co-streaming of the event. With all of the messiness that has come with copyright and DMCA policies on Twitch, Sony must work around these policies so that content creators can comfortably stream the event.
Sony has confirmed that this showcase will last 40 minutes. This is about on par with Nintendo’s E3 2021 showing, though it is far behind Microsoft’s 90-minute showcase (although that was helped in large part by Bethesda’s presence at the conference). Sony has noted that there will be further updates after the show, featuring some of the studios that will be featured in the main presentation. This means the showcase will likely be comprised of trailers, while the post-show will feature deeper dives into the gameplay and development of these titles.
What Will Be Announced At PlayStation Showcase 2021?
Sony has noted that the PlayStation Showcase will feature updates from PlayStation Studios and “some of the industry’s most imaginative developers.” Sony also notes that we will see games releasing “this Holiday and beyond.” These blanket statements don’t go into great detail about what will be at the show, but Sony has confirmed something that won’t be at the show; in its announcement, it noted that the next-generation PlayStation VR will not appear at this event. Sony announced its PlayStation VR successor in February but has been silent on it since.
It can be assumed that we will see more of Horizon Forbidden West at this event, as Sony recently announced its February 18th release date at Gamescom Opening Night. It’s also reasonable to expect that we will get some kind of updates on Gran Turismo 7 and the next installment in the God of War series, which were announced at last year’s PlayStation showcases. On the third-party front, we could see new showcases for some of the titles from previous PlayStation showcases, such as Ghostwire: Tokyo and Final Fantasy XVI. While it may be a bit bolder to expect this, recent reports have indicated that a fifth Sly Cooper title is in development, and this could be the perfect place to revive the franchise.
