Obsidian Entertainment’s ambitious RPG Pillars of Eternity provides hours of entertainment, including a bonus mega-dungeon and numerous side-quests.
Pillars of Eternity is a multi-platform RPG from Obsidian Entertainment first released in 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign, which saw the project meet its funding goal within one day. Its sequel was also crowdfunded and released in 2018, taking players to the Deadfire Archipelago and featuring ship combat.
Pillars of Eternity blends elements of Dungeons & Dragons with Planescape: Torment, making for a game rife with exploration and numerous dialogue options to help shape a player’s character within the game world. Pillars of Eternity can satisfy any RPG itch while offering a wealth of bonus content for those who want to spend an extended time in its game world.
How Long It Takes To Beat Pillars Of Eternity
In Pillars of Eternity, players explore the Free Palatinate of Dyrwood, an eastern kingdom in the world of Eora that is near total collapse. Players can customize their main character at the start of the game and fight using a real-time tactical combat system. Players shape their character throughout the game through dialogue options and how they respond to event scenarios.
The main campaign, “The Hollowing of the Dyrwood,” is comprised of four acts spread over 14 quests. Players can expect to beat Pillars of Eternity after roughly 36 hours of playtime.
How Long It Takes To Complete Pillars Of Eternity
Not counting its DLC, The White March Part One and Two, Pillars of Eternity has a lot of optional content for players to complete. Someone who wants to experience everything the game offers should expect to play over 100 hours.
Side-quests are an RPG staple, and Pillars of Eternity offers plenty. Not counting the miscellaneous side-quests, eight of the player’s companions have their own optional quest lines. Players can also choose to complete one faction’s questline. The game offers three, but accepting one faction questline automatically closes off access to the other two. Pillars also lets players hunt wanted targets via bounties to earn money and complete less intensive forms of side-quests called tasks.
Those who enjoy a good dungeon crawl can attempt to overcome the Endless Paths of Od Nua. This dungeon is accessible early in the game; however, players will need to progress within the main campaign before they can hope to traverse all 15 levels of the dungeon. Those who succeed in defeating bosses and completing levels in Od Nua can earn special gear.
Finally, Pillars of Eternity adds a management sim element with the Caed Nua stronghold. The more players upgrade this Keep, the more bonus activities become available. Players can upgrade Caed Nua’s Prestige and Security throughout the game. Enhancing these elements reduces the number of negative events, such as attacks or taxes, that can happen at the stronghold. The stronghold is also a valuable tool for boosting the experience of companions not in the player’s active party. These characters can embark upon their own missions to earn money and experience.
