Paramount Pictures’ Jackass Forever draws the ire of PETA following the first trailer, which featured numerous animals involved in stunts.
Jackass is no stranger to courting controversy. However, the first trailer for Paramount Pictures’ Jackass Forever has drawn the ire of a group not even Johnny Knoxville may be equipped to combat: PETA.
“Jackass stunts are violent and vulgar, but if the talent is willing and the wounds are self-inflicted, that’s one thing—however, it’s quite another when animals are exploited, harassed, and harmed: That’s cruelty,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk declared in a written statement. “The Jackass Forever trailer shows Knoxville’s crew provoking a snake and a bull to the point of attack, treating a tarantula like a game piece, and coercing a chained bear to eat honey off a bound participant. Four months before its release, Jackass Forever has already risked normalizing animal exploitation and legitimizing the cruel exhibitors who pimp out animals for productions. PETA is urging producers to remove stunts involving animals from the film.”
PETA’s remarks aren’t without merit, as the aforementioned animal-based stunts do appear in the trailer. Two of them were also teased when Jackass Forever debuted a batch of still shots along with the fourth film’s official title.
Created by Johnny Knoxville, Spike Jonze and Jeff Tremaine, Jackass debuted on MTV in 2000, originally running for three seasons and 25 episodes until 2002. The series centered on Knoxville and his friends performing wacky stunts and pranks on one another, sometimes in a public setting. While the show itself was short-lived, it spawned four theatrical films (including Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa), one straight-to-DVD film, two television specials and several spinoff shows, including Viva La Bam and Wildboyz.
Jackass Forever arrives in theaters Oct. 22.
