Persona 5 Still Deserves Its Fighting Game Spinoff

[ad_1]

Though many Persona fans already looking ahead to Persona 6, Atlas should return to their many spin-offs and publish a Persona 5 fighting game.

One of the more popular aspects of the Persona series is the many different spin-offs that Atlas creates for every main-series entry. The three rhythm game spin-offs created for Persona 3, Persona 4 and Persona 5 outline just how much effort goes into translating each game to a brand new format, with iconic songs getting all-new remixes. One of the Persona series more well-loved spin-offs is the Persona 4 fighting game, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

Persona 4 Arena and its rerelease, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, were created by BlazBlue and Guilty Gear Strive developers Arc System Works and managed to have a pretty solid competitive player base. The game also has a hefty amount of fan service with the dialogue that characters can have with each other before and after a match, making it a fantastic game for Persona 4 fans. Even fans of the previous three Persona titles had something to enjoy, as characters from those three games helped to fill out the roster.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax went on to heavily influence BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. The Persona characters in that fighting game were heavily based on their designs from Arena Ultimax. With how popular and well-loved the Persona 4 fighting games were, it’s curious why a Persona 5 Arena game hasn’t been made. It’s not like there’s been a lack of spin-offs games for Persona 5, as Persona 5 Strikers and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night both exist.

Strikers even makes a great case as to why the characters from Persona 5 would translate incredibly well to a fighting game. Being a musou game, Strikers gave the cast of Persona 5 a much more action-oriented set of abilities. While it could be argued that a musou game has to limit the number of moves a character can do when compared to a fighting game, these two genres are still far closer to each other than a turn-based RPG and a fighting game are.

It’s also hard not to mention Joker’s appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when talking about how well Persona 5 characters would work in a fighting game. While Smash Ultimate and Persona 4 Arena are two different styles of fighting games, Ultimate still did something incredibly important with Joker. Persona characters can typically use a wide range of abilities and Personas, but Smash Ultimate was able to pick out the more iconic abilities to give Joker.

One of the more unique elements of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is that the story mode is completely canon, taking place after the events of Persona 4 Golden and the original Persona 4 Arena. The plot serves a similar purpose to the Persona Q games, creating a scenario where the characters from multiple different Persona games can crossover. While Strikers does serve as a continuation for Persona 5‘s story, there have been very few games where Persona 5 characters appear alongside the other Persona characters.

The characters from Persona 5 would translate perfectly to a fighting game. On top of that, there hasn’t really been a canon game that lets other Persona characters interact with the cast from Persona 5. A new Arena spin-off for Persona 5 is long overdue, especially given just how popular Persona 5 was. There’s a whole new crowd of Persona fans that could be introduced to fighting games through a possible Persona 5 Arena.
