Peacemaker’s First Heroic Act Was Apprehending Kite Man

Peacemaker isn’t afraid to bring attention to strange DC characters, but its fifth episode brings attention to the strangest one yet.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Peacemaker Episode 5, “Monkey Dory,” now streaming on HBO Max.

The DC Universe’s decades-long history has been the home to some genre-defining ideas and others that helped fuel the campiness of the Golden Age of comics. However, none have had it as bad as Batman’s list of enemies. From The Baffler to Polka-Dot Man, the Caped Crusader’s villains weren’t always as diabolical as they were terrifying, but like other strange examples from the DC Universe, HBO Max’s Peacemaker has offered them a home. The show’s latest addition comes in a brief moment that namedrops another classic Batman villain named Kite Man.

Kite Man was first introduced in the pages of Batman #133 by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang. Initially, he was considered a typical thief who used trick kites to accomplish his crimes. For the most part, he was considered a joke when compared to Batman’s other, more iconic adversaries. However, in the DC Rebirth timeline, the character was given an expanded backstory that made him both tragic and likable. Although the character’s popularity has grown, his cameo in Peacemaker shows that the humor in his gimmick is still not lost on many.

After he and ARGUS Agent Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) eliminate a warehouse of the extraterrestrial invaders known as Butterflies, the two share a drink in Peacemaker’s trailer. While looking at a lot of his stuff, she stumbles upon a newspaper clipping with a headline that reads, “New Hero Peacemaker Apprehends Kite Man.” Ironically, this is also the first time that audiences have seen Peacemaker do anything legitimately heroic.

Since The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker has claimed he was an advocate for justice and peace, but his actions would dictate otherwise, and he often acted more violent than heroic. As a result, the possibility of him acting like a true hero and fighting supervillains seems like a longshot, but the clipping shows that there was a point where he was once far more of a savior in the public eye.

That said, Peacemaker has also made mention that he has no villains because he makes a point of killing them. Therefore, it could be possible that the newspaper clipping that’s framed to make him look like a hero is only giving audiences a small part of the story. Instead, it could be that Peacemaker shot Kite Man out of the sky, ending the zany criminal’s career before it could even take off.

While the fate of Kite Man is still unknown, the acknowledgment of the unexpected villain helps bring life to the massive world of Peacemaker. From Judomaster to Bat-Mite, it’s clear that there are even more lower-tier DC characters that exist in this universe. While it is unknown if Kite Man could appear in a future installment, knowing that has or had existed shows that this DC live-action universe is not afraid to embrace its wackiest and most unexpected characters.

To see more about Peacemaker’s past, Peacemaker is streaming now on HBO Max.
