Peacemaker Star Promises an ‘Extraordinary’ Blooper Reel

Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji claims that the superhero series will have an “extraordinary” blooper reel filled with tons of improved comedy.

According to Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji, the hit superheroes series will have a remarkable blooper reel.

When asked by THR if he was ever on the brink of breaking character during filming, Iwuji laughingly admitted, “Oh, not just close, I’ve broken. We’ve all broken at some point. The blooper reel for Peacemaker is going to be extraordinary.” Iwuji is a classically trained actor who has collected prestigious theater accolades over his career. In a comedic change of pace, his role as the special operative with a secretive past Clemson Murn meshes with Peacemaker‘s diverse cast of improvisational talents.

Because Peacemaker creator James Gunn urged acting spontaneity on set and continuously filmed to catch any unplanned performing moments, both the cast and crew often cracked up from the ensuing comedy. “James will always allow the camera to keep rolling even after the scene is finished just to catch on stuff,” Iwuji stated. “And it was hilarious. I laughed a lot. The cameraman laughed a lot. The grip laughed a lot. Everyone laughed.”

Even though Gunn’s a seasoned filmmaker in the action-comedy genre, with hits such as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, the Peacemaker writer/director also couldn’t help but enjoy the cast’s off-scene riffs. “James would be laughing in the director’s box or wherever the hell he is,” Iwuji noted. “But when you’d hear him laughing, it all adds up because if you can make these people laugh, especially crew…Crew are hardened. Crew aren’t easily impressed. They’ve been there, done that a thousand times. So if they were laughing, we knew we were onto something special.”

Despite his co-stars’ comedic antics, Iwuji at first tried to keep a straight face, saying, “I laugh so easily, but for a while, I didn’t; I kept it together.” However, the Peacemaker cast overcame Iwuji’s efforts due to their secret pranking pact against the Clemson Murn actor. “But I didn’t realize until later that John [Cena] and everyone had a plan to get me to break. So after a while, I just couldn’t keep it together any longer,” Iwuji admitted.

Clemson Murn is Peacemaker‘s impassive ARGUS team leader, conducting Task Force X’s Project Butterfly mission to exterminate a bug-like alien infestation. For this reason, Murn’s unwavering seriousness among his fellow comedic ARGUS teammates was an education for the experienced thespian. “I’m very much, as you can tell, the straight man in that group, and a lot of the cast have backgrounds in improv and comedy,” Iwuji explained. “My background is with Shakespeare and Chekhov, so you speak exactly what’s written there. So it was a real learning curve to watch them just on riff on stuff.”

New episodes of Peacemaker air Thursdays on HBO Max.
