Peacemaker star John Cena says the upcoming HBO Max series will delve into the antihero’s instilled sense of douchebaggery.
HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker will delve into the origin of the eponymous antihero, including his less-than-desirable character traits.
“This guy is a loud, obnoxious, bro-ey douchebag,” John Cena told Empire. “That sucks. But why? At what point did he become such a douchebag and what does that mean? There’s a lot to dive into there.”
Announced in September 2020, Peacemaker will feature Cena reprising his Suicide Squad role in what may or may not be a prequel to the film. “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag,” The Suicide Squad writer/director and Peacemaker producer James Gunn said when the show was announced. “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”
“I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie,” Cena added. “I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”
Produced by James Gunn, Peacemaker stars John Cena, Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Chris Conrad, Chukwudi Iwuji, Lochlyn Munro, Annie Chang, Alison Araya, Lenny Jacobson, Elizabeth Faith Ludlow, Rizwan Manji and Christopher Heyerdahl. The series premieres on HBO Max in January 2022.
