Peacemaker Is Secretly DC’s Most Important Project

[ad_1]

While it might simply seem like a mere spin-off show, Peacemaker will decide the future of the DCEU and the Suicide Squad in many ways.

The Suicide Squad is now in theaters and on HBO Max, and the soft reboot of the DC property is already widely acclaimed. It’s certainly an important step for the DCEU as it attempts to wipe the slate clean from the less than beloved 2016 entry and regain momentum for the cinematic universe in general. As important as these things are, there’s another project related to the movie that’s arguably even more important — Peacemaker.

The upcoming Peacemaker TV series is a spin-off, starring John Cena’s take on the former Charlton Comics character. While it might simply seem like a mere spin-off show, Peacemaker will decide the future of the DCEU and the Suicide Squad in many ways. Here’s a closer look at just how important the show is and why it must be seen for the DCEU’s sake.

Why Peacemaker Is Important to HBO Max

DCEU movies have performed well on HBO Max, being some of the app’s most viewed and popular movies. This goes for the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League as well as other movies such as Wonder Woman 1984 and previous entries. However, with the exception of the Snyder Cut, these films have either been dual theater releases or movies that had long since left the cinema. Even the new version of Justice League was an exception, resulting from a massive fan campaign.

Thus, the HBO Max exclusive Peacemaker is definitely a first, as it will truly test how many eyes the DCEU brand can bring to the app. The star power of John Cena will likely wrangle in some extra viewers as well. Still, the strength of The Suicide Squad and its take on Christopher Smith will also be a huge factor in drawing casual audiences and comic book fans to the TV show.

Why Peacemaker Is Important to the DCEU

The show’s success or potential lack thereof will also be paramount to the DCEU’s future. If it succeeds, more seasons of the show are likely inevitable, while TV spin-offs of other Suicide Squad cast members or other DCEU characters could also be made. The latter is especially important, as it could be vital in resuscitating and pushing forward the cinematic universe’s momentum. Formerly planned films such as the Aquaman spin-off involving the Trench or even the New Gods movie could be reimagined as TV shows following Peacemaker‘s success, with other shows being made to involve DCEU property heroes such as Superman and Wonder Woman.

Of course, if the show isn’t as successful as Warner Bros. hopes it to be, they might put the kibosh on further The Suicide Squad spin-offs and DCEU shows in general. This could also have an impact on what movies are made for the universe in the future. If nothing else, the result could be DC/WB focusing more on the Arrowverse again. Thus, with the direction of the DCEU going forward widely uncertain, James Gunn’s movie and TV show have suddenly become chief cornerstones. It remains to be seen how big of an impact they make, but with the aforementioned rave reviews, the movie is sure to be the DCEU’s biggest success story yet.

Catch The Suicide Squad in theaters or on HBO Max in the United States, starting at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 5.
