After four episodes of HBO Max’s Peacemaker, it’s clear John Cena’s Chris Smith could actually become the most powerful superhero in the DCEU.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Peacemaker Episode 4, “The Choad Less Traveled,” now streaming on HBO Max.
One of the kookiest things about John Cena’s Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad was his helmet. It was totally outlandish, but still very comics-accurate for the marksman, giving him a signature look running missions for Task Force X. And in the Peacemaker series, as we learn more about Chris and his past, it’s clear he could actually become the most powerful superhero in the DC Extended Universe thanks to the tech behind the headpiece.
This bombshell about the headgear came to light when Chris visited his racist dad, Auggie, after as he took on a new job with ARGUS. They went into Auggie’s lab, where the tyrant revealed he built a series of new helmets in the years Chris was in jail.
These had pretty astounding powers, though, which left fans wondering why Chris never asked for one of them before he got incarcerated. Admittedly, his dad hates him so he may not have gifted him something superior, but there’s now a lot of potential for Chris as he tries to seek redemption. And that’s because he can literally become a one-man army with the right helmet.
He eventually took one from that meeting which emitted a sonic blast, and as seen when he fought a Butterfly, it could melt enemies to goop in the blink of an eye. It’s something that can take out the Flash, for example, if he ever needed to battle the Scarlet Speedster. If one were wired up with Kryptonite as well, Superman could easily be defeated, which would make Chris a prime candidate for the Justice League.
The fact Auggie had helmets that could make Chris invisible, gift him x-ray vision, or allow him to breathe underwater says it all. One of them even enabled a full-body force field, so should ARGUS wire up one with all these powers, he could become like Amazo, but without the need to learn from opponents and adapt. He’d be automatically ready with a multi-purpose helmet, boasting things like the ability to move undersea like Aquaman, come off dominant like Wonder Woman and rock a degree of invulnerability even Batman would adore.
It’s reminiscent of his all-in-one helmets from the comics where he had an ultrasonic beam, a fuse for an RDX bomb, a laser beam, pocket radar, voice duplication equipment and underwater mode abilities. This turned him into a near-perfect soldier, flying around with his jetpack, so it does lay a template as to what could happen down the line.
Seeing as Auggie won’t upgrade him after he got thrown in jail, all Chris needs is the right technician to put all these things together. It’d prove he’s not the joke that Rick Flag touted him to be, and against humans, metas, invading aliens like the Butterflies, or cosmic gods, Peacemaker would be the ultimate warrior.
To see how Chris could outshine the Justice League, Peacemaker is streaming now on HBO Max.
