Pattinson Says His Dark Knight Lives Like a Street Criminal

The Batman’s Robert Pattinson reveals that his version of the Caped Crusader from the upcoming movie ‘practically lives in the gutter.’

The Batman star Robert Pattinson revealed that his interpretation of the Dark Knight lives more like a criminal in the upcoming film.

“The interesting thing is that this Batman practically lives in the gutter. He is nowhere at home, except on the street when he wears the costume,” Pattinson told French publication Premiere, via a French-to-English translation. “He lives a criminal life, but without committing crimes! I felt like I could get something out of that. Anyway, I could only play a superhero if he was really dirty! (Laughs.)”

Pattinson’s latest comments about playing a different version of Batman echo similar statements made by his co-star Andy Serkis, who recently shared that his character Alfred Pennyworth’s relationship with Bruce Wayne would also be depicted differently than in previous films. “Bruce is on this nihilistic journey, and they’ve pulled apart … It’s got to the point where they almost no longer talk,” Serkis said. “If they bump into each other in the corridor, it’s a very icy and painful greeting. They almost live in separate worlds now.” Similarly, a German synopsis for The Batman also teased a change to Bruce and Selina Kyle’s relationship, revealing that the two were friends as children and that Selina’s reappearance creates “additional emotional confusion” for Bruce.

Beyond his musings on Batman living as a criminal, Pattinson also shared in another interview that The Batman is a more detective-based movie than a superhero-based one, recalling, “In the first meeting, [director and co-writer Matt Reeves] was saying, we want to lean into the ‘world’s greatest detective aspect,’ and be a detective noir movie. And, you know, normally when directors say that, they just do like a mood board, and it’s just about the imagery. But I read the script, and it is! It’s a detective movie. It happens all the time in the graphic novels, but it’s always kind of on the backburner in the movies.”

As for Reeves himself, while The Batman was originally supposed to take place in the DC Extended Universe–with Ben Affleck set to be both lead actor and director–it was revealed last year that Reeves refused to make the movie if it was set in the DCEU. At the time, Reeves explained that he told both Affleck and Warner Bros. he would “need to be able to create an iteration with a personal aspect to [The Batman], which wasn’t obliged to ‘connect with all these other things’ in the DCEU.”

Producer Dylan Clark added, “Warner Bros. has a multiverse where they’re exploring different ways to use [Batman] … We don’t get involved in that. Matt is interested in pushing this character to his emotional depths and shaking him to his core.” It should be noted that while The Batman is no longer connected to the DCEU, a report from last April stated that the film would take place on Earth-2.

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman opens in theaters on March 4.
