While Deathstroke Inc. #2 goes to space, the series has returned one of its weirdest characters to modern continuity in a preview for the issue.
DC Comics just reintroduced one of its weirdest characters into modern continuity within the pages of Deathstroke Inc. #2.
While he is in the preview for the issue, we are not talking about Cyborg Superman, but the alien character, The Weird. The Weird is…odd. The character was created by Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson and introduced in a four-issue miniseries that bore his name in the summer of 1988. While he has appeared in other books since then, he has not been seen in quite some time.
The Weird is an energy being from another dimension (but not the Fifth dimension like Mr. Mxyztplk from Superman) and comes from a race called the Zarolatts. His people were used by the Macrolatts as living batteries, much like Cyborg Superman is seen doing in the preview. The character has not been seen in over a decade, the last series to feature him being Strange Adventures in 2009–not to be confused with Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ 12-issue epic that recently ended. Since Dark Nights: Death Metal rebooted the DC Universe again at the end of last year, this marks the character’s first appearance in the current DC continuity.
Cyborg Superman, however, is a character that most readers and DC enthusiasts are more familiar with. He first appeared in Adventures of Superman #465 following The Death of Superman storyline, a follow-up story which was called Reign of the Supermen, as it introduced Cyborg Superman and others attempting to replacing the Man of Steel: Steel, Superboy and the Eradicator. Both The Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen were adapted in animated films within the last five years, with Hank Henshaw (Cyborg Superman) also appearing in The CW’s Supergirl, portrayed by J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter actor David Harewood.
The Weird has yet to receive any type of adaptation, whether it be live action or animation. Deathstroke Inc. #1 ended with the T.R.U.S.T. organization seeking to recruit more heroes and villains to its cause, so the question remains whether the group has sent Deathstroke, Black Canary and Toyman 2.0 into space for Cyborg Superman or The Weird to join its ranks. If the answer is The Weird, then fans could see more appearances by the character in this Infinite Frontier era of DC Comics.
