Oliver Stone Slams Cancel Culture & Twitter Banning the President
Hollywood director Oliver Stone has slammed Twitter for banning President Donald Trump, calling the move “shocking” and denouncing the country’s growing practice of censorship, which is being carried out by social media corporations. During an interview with Britain’s The Independent during the 74th annual Cannes Film Festival, the two-time Oscar winner was asked about cancel culture.
“I despise it,” the filmmaker replied. “I’m sure I’ve been cancelled by some people for all the comments I’ve made…. it’s like a witch hunt. It’s terrible. American censorship in general, because it is a declining, defensive, empire, it has become very sensitive to any criticism.”
“What is going on in the world with YouTube and social media. Twitter is the worst. They’ve banned the ex-President of the United States. It’s shocking!”
Mr. Stone added that he rejects cancel culture’s need to judge historical figures based on contemporary, “woke” standards. “I’m conservative in that way… don’t expect to re-judge the entire society based on your new values.”
The acclaimed director was in Cannes to promote his latest documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, in which he revisits to the President John F. Kennedy assassination theories that were explored in his 1991 movie JFK.
