Santa Fe County authorities confirmed that the prop gun that Alex Baldwin fired on the set of Rust contained live rounds.

More details have come about the tragic on-set shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust. Hutchins was killed when a loaded prop gun used by actor Alec Baldwin went off.

The New York Times reported that law enforcement officials from Santa Fe County have confirmed that the gun Baldwin fired for a scene in his movie Rust contained a live round. This happened despite the film’s assistant director telling Baldwin “Cold Gun!,” a code word signifying that a prop gun is safe to use and who, as stated in the county’s affidavit, “did not know live rounds were in the prop-gun.” The gun killed Hutchins, Rust‘s director of photography, and wounded its director Joel Souz, who was recently let go from the hospital.

One of the core protocols of using firearms for film and TV production include tight management by licensed armorers, gun safety training for cast members, and the total exclusion of live ammunition.” How the gun became loaded with an actual bullet alongside blanks is not yet known, but, according to the affidavit, Baldwin’s three prop guns were placed on a cart away from the set because of “Covid-19 restrictions.” Officials investigating Hutchins’ death are currently looking for any video evidence that could show what happened and determine whether the guns were tampered with beforehand.

After news of the prop gun shooting broke on Thursday, comparisons were immediately drawn to the infamous accidental death of actor Brandon Lee while filming 1993’s The Crow. Lee, son of the legendary martial arts actor Bruce Lee, was shot by a prop gun containing a .44-caliber bullet and, after being taken to the hospital, died 12 hours later. Baldwin later released a statement to Twitter saying that he’s “fully cooperating” with Sante Fe County’s Sheriff’s Office and has been in touch with Hutchins’ family.

According to spokesman Juan Rios, Santa Fe County’s case “remains active and ongoing” and, regarding the prop gun bullet, “a focus of the investigation is what type it was and how did it get there.”
