The Star Wars: Life Day Treasury teases how Obi-Wan Kenobi’s often awkward relationship with droids changed on Tatooine.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Life Day Treasury, by George Mann, Cavan Scott and Grant Griffin, on sale now.
In the Star Wars Universe, Obi-Wan Kenobi has often had something of an odd relationship with droids. However, the Star Wars: Life Day Treasury seemingly shows that Obi-Wan’s views on droids evolved following his exile in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
While Obi-Wan didn’t necessarily hate droids, he’s often dismissive of them, and prioritizes organic life over droids at several points in the saga. In The Clone Wars episode “Downfall of a Droid,” for example, Anakin Skywalker loses R2-D2. Obi-Wan replies by saying, “R2 units are a dime a dozen. I’m sure you’ll find a suitable replacement.”This is only one of many examples, but the general impression Obi-Wan gives is that he doesn’t particularly value droids, despite Star Wars repeatedly showing them as having distinct personalities.
In the “An Old Hope” story from the Star Wars: Life Day Treasury, an elderly bearded man sees an astromech droid named LA-R1 being abducted by Jawas on Tatooine. Although he’s never explicitly identified as such, the old man is obviously Obi-Wan. Eventually, however, the Jawas’ Sandcrawler gets wrecked, and LA-R1 is left alone aboard the vessel. While the droid’s fate seems sealed, a Force user cuts him out of the Sandcrawler. This and Obi-Wan’s kindness causes LA-R1 to mistake the elderly Jedi for a Santa Claus-like figure known as the “Oil-Bringer.”
Droids are, generally, treated poorly in the Star Wars universe, and it’s unclear just why Obi-Wan didn’t extend his empathy to them. However, “An Old Hope” seems to indicate Obi-Wan eventually learned to care more about them. While it’s possible Obi-Wan may have just been trying to help out LA-R1’s owner (the text does make clear he knows him), he certainly doesn’t seem to believe this particular droid is so easily replaceable. Obviously the majority of Tatooine’s inhabitants aren’t exactly the richest people in the universe, but rescuing LA-R1 was a potentially dangerous act due to the deadly creatures on the planet. As such, it seems safe to say that Obi-Wan, after Revenge of the Sith, learns to treat droids with at least some respect.
