NYCC 21: Exclusive video inside the Javits Center’s New Wing

[ad_1]

I’ll be honest, I’ve been trying to sneak inside the new wing of the Javits Center for weeks. One time they let me peek in, but they wouldn’t let me take photos. But as the above video shows, I’m finally in and it’s pretty spectacular.

As you may recall, from 2010 to 2016 the Javits Center had a “North Hall” where Artist Alley was located for a while. Despite being planned as a temporary shed, it was actually far more airy and comfortable than the rest of the convention center. But after the 2016 con the North Hall was demolished to make way for the permanent expansion.

Everyone was sad to see it go. In fact I made a video about THAT too:

It’s been five long years, with me and Torsten Adair perhaps the people outside of the Mayor’s office and the tourism bureau most concerned with when this new area would open. (Okay, the ReedPOP folks who run NYCC also cared.)

And now, it’s here. Just in time for a global pandemic! But it features many amazing things: five floors! Endless escalators! A huge theater! Giant, Hoth-like blast doors; and reportedly a one acre farm and roof deck.

As we all know, NYCC was in the past an insanely crowded affair – the expansion adds a desperately needed (and impressive) 1.2 million square feet of space – a fivefold increase in meeting room space. Far from being a cramped, low ceilinged affair, the new wing also adds natural light, high ceilings and sweeping views.

And though someday the new wing will house Artist Alley again, this year it’s set up for panels.

What is the new wing like? Well, I was so excited I made a video! Watch on and see the new wing through my eyes! With very special guest: Debora Aoki.
