Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Andrew Garfield discusses bonding with co-stars Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire over difficulties with their costumes.
Spider-Man: No Way Home star Andrew Garfield discussed bonding with Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire over their Spider-Man costumes.
Garfield explained the hilarious thing all three Spider-Men had in common while speaking to Variety. “There was a brotherhood that got created between Tobey [Maguire], Tom [Holland] and myself. And that’s healing,” Garfield said. “We were like, ‘Oh, my God, you find it hard to pee in the suit? I find it hard to pee in the suit!'”
Garfield joked that Holland was jealous of his suit because it included zippers. “There was talk about going to the bathroom and, you know, padding around the package,” Garfield added. “We talked about what worked for each of us. Tom was jealous because I have little zippers in my suit that I can get my hands out of very easily. To work his phone, he had to use his nose because he couldn’t access his hands.”
Garfield also discussed his love for both the franchise and his Spider-Man co-stars. “There’s a line I improvised in the movie, looking at [Maguire and Holland] and I tell them I love them. That was just me loving them,” Garfield said. “I think the first time we were all in the suit together, it was hilarious because it’s like just three ordinary dudes who were just actors just hanging out. But then also, you just become a fan and say, ‘Oh my god we’re all together in the suits and we’re doing the pointing thing!'”
Spider-Man: No Way Home saw the return of Maguire and Garfield from their retrospective Spider-Man universes, alongside a number of familiar villains. While both of their Spider-Man costumes remained the same for No Way Home, the film’s VFX team rebuilt Maguire and Garfield’s costumes from scratch, as newer technology meant it was easier to start over.
At end of the film, Holland debuts a brand new blue and red suit, which takes inspiration from both Garfield and Maguire’s costumes. In the film’s final moments, Spider-Man is seen swinging across New York City, with the screenplay for the scene reading, “Spider-Man flips and rolls across a snowy roof in a BLUE AND RED SUIT (new for him, but reminiscent of suits he’s seen before).” There’s no word yet on whether this suit has a zipper.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now.
