No Way Home Writers Discuss Finally Giving Peter His ‘Uncle Ben’ Moment

The decision to finally give the MCU’s Spider-Man his “Uncle Ben” moment was a natural part of No Way Home’s development, says the film’s writers.

WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, now in theaters.

Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s big “Uncle Ben” moment was an organic part of the film’s development, according to the writers.

Speaking to THR, screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers discussed the significance of Spider-Man’s signature mantra, “with great power, comes great responsibility.” The pair explained that since Tom Holland’s Peter Parker had a different emotional journey than Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, they didn’t think it made sense to use Uncle Ben’s catchphrase. “This iteration of Spider-Man didn’t start by telling the story of losing Uncle Ben,” Sommers said. “We started at a different place with Peter. Those words are so tied to Uncle Ben, there didn’t seem to be a natural place for it. We weren’t even thinking necessarily, ‘Oh, we have to do it in this one.’ As the story started to develop, and as we got to the scene with May, we realized, ‘This is going to be Peter’s Uncle Ben,’ and the words are going to come out.”

In No Way Home, Holland’s good deeds backfire when an attempt to save Spider-Man’s multiversal villains gets Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May killed. In the moments before her death, May consoles Peter for his noble intentions, affirming that because he had the power to save them, he had a responsibility to try. Sommers said this trauma provided Holland with the connective tissue for his alliance with Maguire and Garfield. “We felt pretty strongly that we need something to really, finally crystalize it for these three guys that they are the same, that they are brothers,” he explained. “And that they are bound in a cosmic way by something and having them share those words in common seemed like the thing to do.”

While Uncle Ben has yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, McKenna feels the character’s moral code was incorporated into Spidey’s other supporting cast members. In the wake of Captain America: Civil War, May provided Peter with all the tools necessary to be a responsible hero. “It’s that same sentiment that I think has been instilled in him from May, but you start realizing that May really is the moral guide of his life and he’s had a father-figure,” he said.

With Aunt May out of the picture, the MCU’s Spider-Man enters uncharted waters moving forward, going where no wall-crawler has gone before: into a fourth film. Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are actively developing future Spider-Man projects, with the potential for a new trilogy. Still, it’s unclear if Holland will step aside for another web-slinger, as the actor has expressed a desire to see Miles Morales, Silk and Jackpot enter the MCU in his stead.
