Spider-Man: No Way Home has enjoyed monumental success since it premiered on Dec. 17. The film quickly broke pandemic records and saw the film quickly became the second-highest grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, surpassing Avengers: Infinity War and coming second to Avengers: Endgame.

Following the major success of No Way Home‘s opening weekend, Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group stated, “This weekend’s historic Spider-Man: No Way Home results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve.”

More significantly, Spider-Man: No Way Home passed the $1 billion mark at the box office on Christmas Day– the first film released in 2021 to do so. The film has officially grossed more than the combined earnings of Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which grossed $379.6 million and $432.2 million, respectively.

No Way Home sees the return of a multitude of characters from various franchises, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On top of the titular Spider-Man, the third instalment in the trilogy features Doctor Strange. He aids the wall-crawler in combating numerous supervillains, ranging from Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, as well as Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Rhys Ifans Lizard from Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man films.

While this may be the third instalment in a trilogy, both Marvel Studios President/Marvel Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige and executive producer Amy Pascal recently teased that Holland may return in a new trilogy of Spider-Man films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Directed by Jon Watts from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Way Home is available in theaters now.
