Spider-Man: No Way Home includes a subtle nod to another character from Spider-Man: Homecoming, who hasn’t been seen in the MCU since then.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, now playing in theaters.
Spider-Man: No Way Home featured the return of familiar faces from across the Multiverse, but also included a subtle update to a character previously seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s trilogy.
Picking up right after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where Quentin Beck aka Mysterio revealed Spider-Man’s real identity to the world, the film sees Peter Parker struggling with the fact that everyone now knows who he is. However, someone from Peter’s past provided their input on what they thought of the revelation: Liz Toomes, daughter of Adrian Toomes aka the Vulture.
As pointed out by The Direct, at one point in the film, Doctor Strange walks past a newsstand while pursuing Peter. On that newsstand are copies of People Magazine, an issue which features Liz’s face on the cover alongside the quote “He’s a Liar.” Being that she was Peter’s crush during Spider-Man: Homecoming, the two’s interactions frequently involved the hero lying to Liz about his true whereabouts whenever he would disappear. A big cause for Liz’s public attack on Peter in No Way Home though could be the current status of her father.
Adrian Toomes was apprehended by Spider-Man during the character’s first solo MCU film. Though Toomes found out Peter’s identity as well, he kept it a secret by the end of the film after Peter had saved both his and his daughter’s lives. Peter never told Liz the truth about who he was even as she moved to Oregon, but apologized to her about her family’s situation following Vulture’s incarceration. What didn’t help Peter’s case though was that the same night he apprehended her father, Peter also stood up Liz at their school’s dance that they were attending together.
No Way Home pitted Peter against Spider-Man villains of old, including Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and Sandman from actor Tobey Maguire’s films, as well as the Lizard and Electro from Andrew Garfield’s run as the web head. Yet, villains Tom Holland’s Spider-Man had faced — both Toomes and Beck — were nowhere to be seen, except for Beck’s video message from Far From Home.
Though he wasn’t featured in what may be the highest-performing Spider-Man movie of all time, actor Michael Keaton revealed that he has filmed more scenes as the Vulture for future projects, with the actor also seemingly appearing as Toomes in the upcoming Morbius film starring Jared Leto. However, due to conflicting elements from each different Spider-Man film being included in the upcoming movie’s promotional material, it is unclear if it is set in the MCU, the world of Venom or another universe entirely.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now showing exclusively in theaters.
