Hawkeye directors Bert and Bertie discuss Episode 5’s Spider-Man: No Way Home Easter egg.
WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, in theaters now.
Hawkeye directors Amber Templemore-Finlayson and Katie Ellwood — better known as Bert and Bertie, respectively — recently revealed that their work on the Disney+ series made them privy to a key element of the film Spider-Man: No Way Home ahead of time.
“Ronin” — the fifth and penultimate episode of Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye, which hit Disney+ on Dec. 15 — contains a reference to the “new” Statue of Liberty. This was elaborated on in No Way Home, which premiered in theaters just a two days later on Dec. 17. In No Way Home, it is revealed that the torch the Lady Liberty holds aloft is being replaced by Captain America’s shield.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bert and Bertie were asked if they actually knew what the “new” Statue of Liberty was, or if they simply though it was a fun reference — given Marvel’s notorious secrecy. “We did,” Bertie replied. “There’s a need to know basis. Things like that, there may have been a slightly larger reference to it in the original scripts. We love knowing that stuff. ‘Oh! That’s so cool.’ Just how things weave together. That’s one we were aware of.”
A renovated Statue of Liberty bearing Captain America’s shield was referenced early in No Way Home‘s runtime, with the revamped landmark playing a major role in the film’s final act. More specifically, the scaffolding surrounding the statue serves as the arena for the final battle pitting the three Spider-Men against the villainous alliance of Sandman, Electro, Lizard and Green Goblin. As it turns out, however, this new addition to Lady Liberty wasn’t meant to be, as the giant shield comes crashing to the ground before all is said and done.
Speaking of things that weren’t meant to be, the fact that Hawkeye directly references No Way Home combined with the two projects’ shared Christmastime setting led to some fan speculation that Spidey would be making a cameo in Hawkeye‘s sixth and final episode. However, no such cameo took place. Nevertheless, between establishing Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop and brining Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin back into the fold, Hawkeye has certainly managed to make waves in its own right.
All six episodes of Hawkeye are streaming on Disney+ now. Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently playing in theaters.
