No Way Home Could Restore Peter’s Secret Identity

The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer could hint at a possible way to fix the problem of Peter Parker’s identity being outed.

There have been delays, rumors and title teases, but after months of waiting, the official trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally dropped. In it, Spider-Man must face a brand new dilemma. After Far From Home, everyone knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, not to mention Mysterio framed him for murder. At least that’s an in-universe problem, but it’s still causing all kinds of issues for Peter, MJ, and everyone else.

The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer seems to indicate that the initial plot will revolve around Peter trying to restore his anonymity as Spider-Man. To do so, he needs a little magic – literally. So, he goes to Dr. Strange and asks the wizard to restore his secret identity. From the looks of things, the sorcerer’s intervention is going to cause more problems than it fixes. The solution, though, might be simpler than Peter, or fans of the web-crawling hero, originally thought.

When Peter and Dr. Strange start to mess with the rules of space and time, they find a way to access the multiverse, or at least open their own reality for others to enter. Exactly how it works is still up for debate as Dr. Stranger himself says in the trailer, but the results are problematic because all kinds of former Spider-Man villains are seen swarming into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman, and the Lizard all seem to appear to some extent in the trailer. That’s the first five of a likely Sinister Six. So, Peter not only has to deal with being on America’s most wanted list, but he also has to contend with one of the most fearsome amalgamations of villains ever.

Well, it’s time to get philosophical because Peter’s multiversal conflict might actually be the solution to his secret identity problem. With the multiverse allowing villains from previous Spider-Man movies to return and cause chaos, there’s nothing saying that other Spider-Men couldn’t also wind up in Tom Holland Spider-Man’s timeline to help win the day. Fans have clamored for Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield to return for years, and although the rumors have been denied more than once, it’s always a possibility.

Notably, as one Reddit user points out, having another Spider-Guy or two around could also be an automatic and simple solution to the identity of Holland’s Peter getting outed. All he has to do is publicly appear with one of the other Spider-Men, and his secret identity is restored. People would see a Spider-Man and Holland’s Peter at the same time, thus sowing doubt in Peter’s status as the web-slinging hero and drawing J. Jonah Jameson’s credibility as a reporter into question. It may not be as foolproof as one of Dr. Strange’s spells, but it’s a simple solution to Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s presented problem and it could even allow certain people to still know that Peter is indeed Spider-Man.

To see how or if Peter’s identity problem is really fixed, swing into theaters on December 17th when Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres.
